JEAN Slater assumed she’d started the menopause after recently suffering some health problems on EastEnders.
But a visit to the GP revealed things could be more serious than she thought. So does Jean have cancer and will she be leaving Walford? Here’s the lowdown…
Does Jean Slater have cancer in EastEnders?
Jean was stunned when the doctor told her he wanted to do some extra tests after finding a lump in her abdomen, which could be cancerous.
The cleaner then hides the news from her daughter Stacey Fowler as she tries to come to terms with what she has found out.
Sadly it will turn out that Jean’s symptoms aren’t the menopause but ovarian cancer.
It was revealed earlier this year that Jean would face a battle with the illness as well as her mental health.
In a statement Gillian Wright who plays Jean said: “I’m aware of the impact such stories can have. It’s important that we treat the issue of cancer diagnosis and treatment with huge sensitivity, dignity and respect.
“I hope the story helps create awareness of the disease and is supportive to those affected.”
EastEnders boss Kate Oates added in a statement published by the Daily Mirror: “I know an actor of Gillian’s calibre will approach the story with great truth and depth.
“The Slaters are an amazing ensemble family and this story is a completely fresh subject for them to tackle. I know they will do it justice and raise awareness of such an important issue that affects so many people.”

So is Jean Slater leaving EastEnders?
It’s not known at the moment if Jean will pull through her cancer battle or if her mental health issues will end up becoming too much for her to bear.
There’s been no official statement from either EastEnders or Gillian about whether she’s leaving the soap so we hope to see her character make a full recovery.
But it has been revealed that her son Sean Slater is returning to the Square after ten years away from the soap.
Actor Rob Kazinsky has a successful career over in the states so it’s possible that his character is making a return for Jean’s exit storyline.
