"Many Photos" - Britons who helped the Nazis during World War II still receiving pensions from Germany

British citizens who helped the Nazis are receiving pension payments from the German government for helping Hitler's forces during World War II, according to a group of Belgian MPs.

Olivier Maingain, Stephane Crusniere, Veronique Caprasse and Daniel Senesael told the Belgian parliament that British and Belgian citizens are among those believed to be receiving around £378.26 to £1,108.70 per month, according to RTBF.

National authorities are unaware of the identities of those receiving payments, and only the German ambassadors in each country know who they are, meaning the payments are tax free.

Around 30 Belgians receive the plush pay-outs per month, while it is unclear how many in the UK are paid.

It is unclear whether the people receiving the payments are British nationals who volunteered to help the Nazis, or if they are German nationals who emigrated to the UK after the war.

In a statement to DW, the Belgian MPs wrote: 'The situation is the same in the UK, where former SS members also receive pensions directly from Germany without the payments being either communicated to, or taxed by, the British authorities.'

It is noted that Germany pays 50 euros a month to people who were deported or subjected to forced labour during the war, Euronews reported.

Belgian MPs called on the government to 'restore justice - fiscal, social and memorial - befitting historic and moral commitments taken by the founders of Europe, including our country and Germany'.

The group called on the Belgian government to address the pensions with Angela Merkel's government, a move which was supported in parliament.

Ulla Jelpke, the German socialist leader, said the government's parties, in particular Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), had continually blocked attempts to stop the payments.

She told German news website DW: 'I think it's unacceptable that Nazi collaborators have been getting pension payments for decades, while victims of the Nazis had to fight for compensation

'This goes for foreign SS volunteers just as much as for domestic ones. Anyone who voluntarily participated in the murderous destructive policies of the Nazis should not get any reward.'

The pensions were the only degree Hitler issued which was not revoked at the Potsdam Conference in 1945.
