When I was growing up, Saturdays were for two things: Saturday morning cartoons and MADtv. Running from 1995 – 2009, the sketch comedy series was known for it’s raw, unfiltered jokes and spoofs, often going places that no other show would dare to. Sadly, we can’t bring MADtv back (even though they tried in 2016, and let’s not even go there…), but we’ll always remember these iconic scenes and characters.

Darrell – Brutha at the Cinema
Most women have met a guy like Darrell, the borderline stalker who just doesn’t take no for an answer. If that guy is you, well… Ironically, the character was portrayed by a woman, Nicole Randall Johnson.

Ms. Swan
“Ok, I teh yu evryteen.” Alex Borstein’s Ms. Swan was undoubtedly one of the show’s most hilarious and memorable characters, and helped catapult the comedian’s career, most notably as the voice of Lois Griffin on Family Guy. Borstein wrote every Ms. Swan sketch and apparently even wrote a script for a Ms. Swan movie. Unfortunately, there has never been any plans to produce the film, but we can still hope, right?

Neighbour Camcorder War
Here’s the set up: Two neighbours tape each other while hurling insults and threats. This ridiculous idea really holds up nowadays.

The Vancome Lady
Nicole Sullivan proved over and over again that she could carry pretty much any scene on her own. So it’s no surprise that her character, the Vancome Lady, Kathy Wajanowski, made 24 appearances.

Larry Felmore – Oscar Madness
Remember that feeling of excitement you got going to Blockbuster on a Friday night, ready to grab one of the newest releases, only to find out that every copy of The Waterboy was already gone and you’d be stuck marathoning The NeverEnding Story yet again with your brother and sister? Ya, me neither. But I do remember Larry, the celebrity-obsessed hothead, one of the many hilarious characters played by MADtv legend Michael McDonald.

The iPad Commercial
Before the actual iPad, there was the… iPad?

Lorraine Swanson
Lorraine Swanson was Mo Collins’ most recurring character, which is actually kind of crazy when you think about it because her most popular catchphrase was a cough. Collins has said that she based Lorraine’s entire persona around that prominent cough, and based on her popularity, it obviously worked.

Steve Jobs Reveals the iRack
If you were a fan of the show than you know this sketch, and you also know why I’m not touching this one. Remember when I said that MADtv often went places that no other show would dare to go? Case in point.

Kenny Rogers
After Will Sasso left the show, it became known as “The House that Sasso Built”, and rightfully so. The comedian portrayed some iconic characters during his run, but my favourite will always be his impressions of Kenny Rogers.

Stuart Larkin
You can’t talk about MADtv without mentioning Stuart. Appearing 38 times, he was a staple on the show, and although his scenes were almost always the same, filled with “Look what I can do!”, “Dooooon’t!!!”, and “Let me do it!”, they were always hilarious.

Bunifa Latifah Halifah Sharifa Jackson – Lowered Expectations
A parody of video dating, because that was a thing back then, Lowered Expectations was a recurring sketch on the show, but I’d argue that none were funnier than Bunifa Latifah Halifah Sharifa Jackson’s. “Oh my GOOOOOOOOOD!!!”

Antonia Timmens
I mentioned earlier how amazing Nicole Sullivan was on the show, and her character Antonia, the simple-minded young woman that drove everyone crazy, was probably her best.

Bon Qui Qui – Bon Qui Qui at King Burger
Bon Qui Qui, the King Burger employee with zero patience, is a very unique character on MADtv. Anjelah Johnson, the actress who portrayed her, actually retained the rights to the character so that she could use it without Warner Bros. permission.

Dot Goddard
This gum-chewing, glove-obsessed, scatter-brained 8-year-old confused me, in a funny way. She was the neglected sibling of a child genius, which I really couldn’t relate to… because I was the smart one in my family! OHH, BURN!
SNL is great sometimes, but it’s no MADtv. Change my mind.
