"Many Photos" - More than 1,000 youngsters were treated for knife wounds in hospital last year – and the number is expected to rise

MORE than 1,000 youngsters aged ten to 19 were treated for knife wounds after being admitted to hospital last year, and the number is expected to rise.

Figures for England show admissions among the age group have soared from 656 in 2012-13 to 1,012 in 2017-2018, a jump of 54 per cent.

Stab injuries across all ages which end up in hospital have risen by 30 per cent since 2012 — from 3,849 to 4,986.

NHS England, which released the figures, warned the true figure will be much higher because victims treated in A&E or other urgent care centres are not recorded.

Martin Griffiths, consultant trauma surgeon at The Royal London Hospital, said: “We see on average two stabbings every day.

“A stabbing has repercussions that stretch far beyond the victim.

Professor Chris Moran, of NHS England, said: “Far too many young people are able to buy knives. We need councils and retailers to stop this.”
