LEEDS defender Pontus Jansson claims boss Marcelo Bielsa’s “killer ball” training regime is tiring the Championship high-fliers out – and causing fatigue BEFORE games.
Controversial Sweden star Jansson rates the Argentinian as “one of the best in the world” – but said Bielsa has not adapted to English football by curbing his gruelling practice sessions.
Leeds lost top spot to Norwich on Saturday when the Canaries sent Bielsa‘s men to their fourth defeat in sixth league games.
And Jansson, who earlier in the season launched a foul-mouthed rant live on Sky Sports, pointed the finger at the 63-year-old in an interview with Swedish Podcast Football Experts called “Murderball with Bielsa”, which Sport Witness translated.
Former Torino ace Jansson said: “The worst thing for us is that you can sometimes feel tired before the match because we have it so intense.
“He has a philosophy that if you are tired, then you should train even harder to make it better.
“He has that philosophy and won’t change. We thought he would understand after a while that the league is a bit tougher and that you sometimes have to be a little smarter about how to train.”
The 27-year-old added: “On Wednesday we have something called ‘killer ball’. It is football 11 against 11, but it is only to run as much as possible, even for me who is central defender.
“But then he drives on with one of the longest training sessions a week on Thursday.
“When you start approaching the match you normally want to slow down a bit, but Thursday training is probably the longest we have.”
Jansson, though, seemed to realise how this dramatic part of his interview might be regarded when he spoke out on social media later.
He tweeted: “I did a podcast in Sweden about some of the work we are doing with Bielsa and I name him one of the best in the world and everything he done for us is just amazing.
“So don’t think anything else. Sometimes I say things with a bit of irony so don’t take every word to serious!”
Many Swedes also stressed Jansson spent most of his podcast PRAISING former Lille, Lazio, Argentina and Chile chief Bielsa.
Former Malmo Jansson motormouth was in trouble as recently as last October when he was banned for one game after accusing ref Jeremy Simpson of “robbery” following a 1-1 draw with Brentford.
Jansson hit Leeds’ late equaliser but told Sky Sports immediately afterwards: “It [the result] is s**t to be fair.”
After being warned by the interviewer over his language, Jansson added: “I don’t care. This was a robbery from the referee so it feels bad. Do you think it should be happy? No chance.”
Leeds were furious over Brentford’s penalty opener.
