New photo Fourth-floor blaze at brand new Manchester restaurant

It is thought that the huge blaze that broke out on the rooftop garden of Manchester's brand new city centre restaurant started from a patio heater, according to users on Twitter.

The large fire at The Ivy restaurant, which had only been open for six weeks, broke out on Friday evening and fire crews were called to the Spinningfields venue at around 5pm.

Work is now underway to repair the damage on the outdoor terrace of the establishment, with the restaurant's owners saying the rest of the building escaped damage.

The restaurant has said it will make a statement in the next 24 hours about when it will reopen.

A statement on The Ivy's restaurant reads: 'The fire at the Ivy Spinningfields was quickly and very efficiently contained by the excellent work of the Fire Services.

'The fire was limited to part of the roof and the building was evacuated in a calm and timely manner.

'We are already working to repair the top floor damage, all other areas of the building are unaffected. We will make a statement in the next 24 hours with details of reopening.'

Fire fighters attended the scene in Hardman Square in Spinningfields as dozens of onlookers stared up at the flames from the street below, while countless more looked on from nearby office windows.

The brand new building attracted dozens of celebrities on its opening night in November.

Former Manchester United players Ryan Giggs and Phil Neville joined Coronation Street stars to get a first look at the four-floor restaurant complex.

Attendees of the restaurant also included Sir Alex Ferguson and Paul Scholes.

Tweeters speculated about the fire pits and patio heaters on the roof terrace, although firefighters have yet to establish the cause.

Paul Berry, who works at In Touch at Hardman Square, told Manchester Evening News the outside balcony area was 'absolutely ablaze', while fearing the fire may spread.

He added: 'It looked like it was dropping down to lower floors. It grabbed hold very quickly from nothing, within ten minutes it was ablaze.’

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the fire is now under control after four engines and an aerial appliance used three breathing apparatus and one hose reel to extinguish the fire and a ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke.

Three crews were told to remain at the scene this evening to dampen down, and road closures had been put in place.

The restaurant is operated by Caprice Holdings Ltd, which also runs London's The Ivy.

The Ivy Spinningfields' website says the building houses two restaurants, a roof terrace and two private dining rooms.
