I was watching The Fellowship of the Ring a week back and was blown away by how good the 17-year-old movie holds up. I really don’t think any film for quite a while will have the impact or legacy that this trilogy created for itself.
So I thought I’d share some facts that really point out what a masterpiece and miracle these films were, starting with the first one.
Christopher Lee, who portrays Saruman in the trilogy, is probably the biggest fan of The Lord of the Rings. He has read the books every year since 1954, and is the only cast member to have personally met J.R.R. Tolkien.
He was also the first person cast, and gave frequent tips to the makeup department on the design of the characters and monsters due to his extensive knowledge of the franchise.
In fact, J.R.R. Tolkien said that if there was ever a film adaptation of his books, he gave Christopher Lee his blessing to star as Gandalf. Lee originally auditioned for that part, but was instead cast as Saruman. He accepted the role, wanting to be a part of the project in any way he could.
In The Fellowship of the Ring, the Gollum that we see would be radically different than when we meet him in The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
While filming the second movie Jackson decided that Andy Serkis’ physical performance would need to be a larger part of the character. This means the special effects company, Weta Digital, had only two and a half months to redo two years worth of work.
Shooting in remote locations all across New Zealand, the cast would normally be helicoptered on to the set. Sean Bean, who played Boromir, would avoid that at any cost if he could. His fear of flying limited him to only riding in the copters if it was 100% necessary.
Bean would hike 2 hours in full costume and gear to shoot the scenes on the snowy mountaintop.
In the greatest news I’ve heard in quite a while, not one of the 300 horses used during the filming of the trilogy was injured. This was helped by fitting the horse and rider with a suit similar to what Andy Serkis wore for motion capture, and then adding the horses into the battle scenes digitally later on.
When on screen, the hobbits only ever walk left to right, never the other way around. This is to push to the idea of traveling West to East, from The Shire to Mordor.
All the chainmail in the series was handmade by two crew members, linking together plastic rings into the armor worn by the cast. They used over 12.5 million pieces of plastic, and by the time the films wrapped they had worn out the fingerprints on their index fingers and thumbs. This was their only task.
The Black Riders aren’t given much dialogue, but the few times we hear their voices they are voiced by Andy Serkis.
The floor where Bilbo drops the One Ring was built to be magnetic so that the ring wouldn’t bounce when dropped. This gives the ring a sense of tremendous weight and power. And it just looks fucking cool.
To show that the Council of Elrond is taking place outside, they had crew members above set dropping leaves randomly to give it a more nature-esque feel. That also means the art department had to collect an insane amount of leaves and paint them all so they didn’t look old or brown during the shoot.
Let that sink in: Peter Jackson had the crew paint each individual leaf so we wouldn’t notice if they were brown.
Gimli is normally the butt of the joke for being so small (“shall I describe it to you, or would you like me to find you a box?” is the best line of the series), but in reality John Rhys-Davies was the tallest cast member in the Fellowship, standing at 6’1″.
Bob Anderson, renowned sword trainer and fight choreographer, called Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), “the best swordsman I’ve ever trained”. Anderson had previously worked on The Mask of Zorro, The Princess Bride, Highlander, and Star Wars.
Mortensen was so skilled that he also chose to use a real steel sword in lieu of the rubber or lighter aluminum swords. He also did his own stunts, so realistically he might actually be the King of Gondor.
There are plenty of examples of the extreme details that director Peter Jackson put into the film, but a funny one is that the cake for Bilbo’s 111th birthday had exactly 111 candles on top. Even with small candles, this is a lot of flames. So much that the polystyrene cake caught fire. Luckily, Ian Holm (Bilbo) finished his scene quickly so that it didn’t interfere with the production schedule.
Peter Jackson gave himself and his children cameos in each film. In The Fellowship of the Ring, he was a peasant outside of the Prancing Pony Inn, and can be seen right after the hobbits are almost hit by a carriage.
Orlando Bloom had originally auditioned to play Boromir’s brother, Faramir, a supporting role in the 2nd two movies. He was given the leading role of Legolas just two days before finishing drama school.
