DRIVERS are set to face an extra £12.50 daily charge to travel across central London from today.
Mayor Said Khan confirmed in December that the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) would spread across large sections of the capital in a planned roll out over the next three years.
But motorists could still be unsure whether they will be slapped with the hefty fee in the initial stages.
Currently, drivers face an £11.50 Congestion Charge to drive through the central London zone between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
And as the first phase of the ULEZ comes into force today, driving through the same area could also see you forced to pay the extra £12.50 fee if your car doesn’t meet ULEZ standards.
According to Transport for London, Euro 3 or below petrol cars registered before 2005 and Euro 5 or below diesel cars registered before September 2015 are unlikely to meet strict emissions regulations.

From April 8, drivers within the ULEZ zone using non-compliant vehicles will pay a daily charge of £12.50, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, according to TfL.
To check if you car meets ULEZ criteria:
- Head to Transport for London’s ULEZ vehicle checker
- Enter your vehicle registration and confirm make and model
- Note other charges you may also be subject to
- As a general rule, you will be subject to the charge if you own a petrol car or van that doesn’t meet Euro 4 standards, or a diesel car or van that doesn’t meet Euro 6 standards
- Motorbikes that don’t meet Euro 3 standards will also be subject to the charge
- Anyone who drives through the zone and doesn’t pay the fee will be subject to a penalty charge of £160
- From October 25, 2021, the charging zone will be expanded out to the North and South Circular roads
The charge will see some drivers paying up to £24 a day to drive through central London.
For example, a motorist driving a 2013 diesel car through the ULEZ zone after 7am on a weekday will likely be charged £24 to cover both the Congestion and ULEZ fees.
Motorists wanting to find out if their car will be affected can use TfL’s vehicle checker.
You simply enter your vehicle registration, confirming your car’s make and model.
The tool will inform you whether you will be subject to the ULEZ charge, on top of the Congestion or T-Charges.
From October 25, 2021, the ULEZ zone will be extended to inner London, as far as (but not including) the North and South Circular roads.
latest motors news
Until that date, central London residents who are registered for the Congestion Charge discount won’t have to pay the ULEZ charge under a “sunset period”.
They will have until October 24, 2021 to upgrade their motor to one that meets ULEZ standards, or face paying the daily charge.
Residents of the expanded zone will not get discounts if their cars don’t meet emissions standards.
