A Chinese mother-of-two has accidentally dropped her baby to death after allegedly losing her footing on an escalator at a shopping centre in southern China.
The baby, whose gender has not been revealed, fell over the handrail of the moving staircase which was going down from the mall's third floor to the second floor.
Surveillance footage shows the woman holding her baby, said to be three or four months old, with her left arm and standing close to the escalator's railing when the tragedy took place.
She apparently lost her footing shortly after stepping onto the machine with her baby and her elder son.
The incident happened at a shopping in the town of Changping in Dongguan, southern China's Guangdong Province, on Saturday afternoon, according to a social media statement from the Changping government.
The baby was pronounced dead by paramedics after failed resuscitation, the statement said.
An insider told Guangdong Radio and Television Group that the woman had dropped the baby because she had failed to keep her balance.
'The mother brought her children to take the escalator. Probably she didn't stand stably, the child fell out of her arm down four storeys,' the insider said.
The local broadcaster added that the incident occurred at the Zhenxing Shopping Square and the family had just finished lunch at a restaurant.

Surveillance camera footage from the shopping centre shows the moment the child slips out of the woman's grasp while her elder son watches on.
In the video, she can be seen stepping onto the escalator with her elder son by her side and her baby in her left arm.
Then, as she suddenly loses her footing and stumbles forwards, her infant falls out of her arm and over the edge of the railing.
After the baby fell, the shocked parent and sibling sprinted down to the ground floor, according to the TV report.
Eyewitnesses said the pair cried on the floor of the atrium after finding the baby in the middle of the mall.
The report added that the baby's father rushed to the scene but the baby was pronounced dead by paramedics at the mall.
Staff at the shopping centre have reported halted and cordoned off the escalator.
The police are investigating the case.
