CROSS out any horse that didn’t finish first or second last time out.

That means Asockstar, Balnaslow, Champagne West, Coastal Tiep, Crazy Jack, Dineur, Just Cause, Mr Mercurial, Never Complain, Numbercruncher, Road To Rome, Shantou Magic, Top Wood and Ucello Conti.

Horses aged 10 and 11 have won seven of the past 10 which means we can overlook Bear’s Affair, Burning Ambition, Gallery Exhibition, Kruzhlinin, Mr Mix, Pass The Hat, Road To Riches, Seefood, Sir Jack Yeats and Starkie.

Shimla Dawn falls short because he hasn’t had a run over the Grand National course before.

That leaves us with Greensalt and WONDERFUL CHARM. Given the prices, a small bet on both looks a good idea.

But the Paul Nicholls runner makes more appeal after winning by no fewer than 55 lengths at Doncaster last time out.
