"Many Photos" - When is Chinese New Year 2019 in London and how’s it celebrated across the UK?

LONDON is set to be filled with fireworks, lantern displays, and an impressive parade for Chinese New Year TODAY.

But how exactly is the festivity celebrated in the capital, and how can the rest of the UK get involved?

When is London’s Chinese New Year festival in 2019?

Despite kicking off TODAY – with the end of the lunar calendar – the main Chinese New Year events take place on the Sunday after in London’s Chinatown, the West End and Trafalgar Square.

Claiming to be the largest celebration outside Asia, Londoners can expect crowds hundred of thousands strong, colourful parades, free stage performances, and traditional cuisine.

The main festivities take place from Shaftesbury Avenue in the north down to Trafalgar Square.

Leicester Square is a more family-friendly event, and Trafalgar Square hosts the biggest stage performances.

When is Chinese New Year 2019?

Falling on February 5 – TODAY – Chinese New Year marks the turn of the lunar year.

Based on the Chinese calendar, the celebration starts on the last day of the last month of the lunar cycle and ends on the 15th day of the first month.

Chinese New Year can begin anytime between January 21 and February 20.

There are 12 zodiac animals and 2019 will be the Year of the Pig.

Council websites are best to watch, however most do not have specifics until early in the year.

In the past, events have spread over the weekend just after the official New Year date.
