IN a new Channel 5 documentary, journalist Jeremy Paxman provides an inside glimpse into the lives of the Royal children.
And in the second episode which aired tonight, the 68-year-old lifted the lid on Prince Charles’ teenage years, claiming the royal was an “unhappy child” – particularly during school.
Speaking about the royal’s time at school, Paxman – who referred to the Prince as an “unhappy child” – interviewed a number of royal insiders, including historian Piers Brendon.
During the documentary, Brendon claimed Charles’ time at Gordonstoun was “brutal” and “so unpleasant” that the young royal “lost all confidence in himself”.
“The Duke of Edinburgh thought that Charles must be made a man of and that he must be sent away to school like other people,” said Brendon.
“Gordonstoun Charles described as ‘Colditz in kilts’, it was a kind of north country borstal really.
“It really was a brutal academy, the boys were horrible to him, if somebody came up to talk to him they’d make slurping noises to indicate that they were sucking up to him so he had no human contacts in the place.
“It was so unpleasant at Gordonstoun that I think he lost confidence in himself and became the sort of twitching, neurotic person that we know, always playing with his signet ring and loosening his collar and doing all these nervous twitchy things.”
Following Charles’ time at Gordonstoun, Paxman explained the Prince was sent to Cambridge University – a path that was reportedly decided at a dinner party.
“[Charles] had no say in the matter, it was decided at a Palace dinner party,” revealed Paxman.
“Among the guests: the Prime Minister, the Archbishop of Canterbury and Uncle Dickie – Lord Mountbatten – the conclusion of this distinguished gathering was that this not particularly talented and not particularly academic young man who just happened to be heir to the throne, should go to Cambridge University.
“It was, as Prince Charles is said to have remarked later, ‘awful to feel so programmed’.”
And it seems the 70-year-old’s time at Cambridge didn’t get any easier, after Broderick Munro-Wilson, who attended the university at the same time, explained the Prince was unable to pick his own pals.
“When one talks about being a friend, Rab Butler who was master of Trinity at the time, had really decided there were about two dozen guys that were suitable for [Prince Charles] to mix with,” he told Paxman.
“You had to be on the list to have a chat with him.”
Despite this, Broderick said Charles “certainly worked hard and went to all his lectures”.
