Knee-high leather boots are a classic — and this year they are slimmer and more calf-hugging than ever.

Avoid the misery of a ‘leg muffin top’ and balance out your look by pairing the boots with a fashionably full midi-skirt and cosy jumper just like fashion entrepreneur Olivia Palermo (above) — it makes your ankles and calves look super slim.

STAY COMFY WITH COUNTRY CHIC

Country attire is staking a claim in our cities this season, and the Duchess of Cambridge is the expert on making this look elegant. Rather than choosing rubber wellies, experiment with a pair of quilted leather boots. 

These are so much more stylish on a rainy day, and you can pull them on over any slim-fitting trousers. 

Add a bulky jacket such as Next’s khaki belted quilted jacket (£65, next.com) and you’re both stylish and wonderfully comfortable. Just don’t try this look with a tweed mini-skirt if you’re over the age of 22.

COWBOY LOOK TO FLATTER YOUR LEGS

Dig out your cowboy boots from the Nineties or invest in new ones, as the Western trend is back. 

Seek out boots with a classic V-shape at the front and a curved heel as this elongates the legs, and go as simple (a plain colour) or snazzy (two-tone) as you like. 

Designer Alexa Chung teams her favourite pair with midi and mini dresses. Cowboy boots often have a low heel, making them great for comfort too. 

Pick a frock that nips you in at the waist to give the illusion of longer pins.

JUST AN INCH OR TWO OF SKIN

The over-the-knee boot is known as the hardest style to wear, especially when you’re no longer in your 20s, but in fact there’s no reason to be scared of it. 

However, you do need to be brave and wear a mini-length skirt or dress. 

Pick one that leaves just a tiny flash of skin visible between the top of the boot and the hem — an inch or two is just enough. 

Avoid shiny fabrics, as this can look a little cheap — you don’t want to have a Pretty Woman moment! Suede and black leather are classics for a reason, or try brown or charcoal grey for a softer look. 

If your pins aren’t as toned as those of Emma Stone, add black tights to make the look sexy without revealing too much. 

Keep things covered up elsewhere, too — try a top or a simple round-neck dress, and layer with a chic jacket.

LIGHTEN UP WITH PASTELS

White footwear used to be reserved for summer — but this season the High Street is brimming with bright white Sixties-inspired ankle boots. 

They emphasise pale bare legs, so take a tip from actress Cate Blanchett, who wore hers with a sherbet-yellow trouser suit. 

Lilacs and pale blues work well too. If you don’t want to brave the entire suit, pastel bottoms and a top will do.

PAIR CHUNKY STYLES WITH RUFFLES

Once the ultimate fashion faux pas, hiking boots are suddenly mysteriously cool. But how on earth do you wear them without looking like an Alpine metalhead? The trick is to go for full-on femininity elsewhere, as presenter Holly Willoughby did in her ruffled black and red dress. 

The floaty, asymmetric hem softens the harsh line of the boots and gives the illusion of longer legs.

Try Ganni’s printed crepe wrap dress (£220, ganni.com) for a similar flattering look. 

If, like Holly, you are teaming black boots with a brightly coloured dress, make sure that you accessorise with a dark belt, such as River Island’s black faux leather textured ring version (£14, riverisland.com) to nip you in at the waist and pull the whole outfit together. 

KEEP IT SIMPLE WITH SOCK BOOTS

These strange hybrids can look incredibly smart when worn well, as Victoria Beckham demonstrates. 

They are very slim-fitting, so can be paired with even the most ankle-hugging of trousers. A pointed toe gives the illusion of slimmer legs, while the stiletto heel adds height. 

These versatile boots can take you from desk to dinner in a flash. Keep the rest of your outfit simple to show them off, as fussy patterns or exaggerated shapes will look eccentric. 

A plain-coloured boiler suit — the unlikely star of the London Fashion Week couture shows — such as Topshop’s khaki version (£59, topshop.com) is a perfect choice.

SMART COAT WITH A SLOUCHY STYLE

This spring, retro boots with a Seventies slouch are back in business.

How very swashbuckling! To look as perfectly put-together as the Duchess of Sussex, wear this flamboyant style in a rich brown or jewel hue with a tailored, neutral coat.

 Meghan’s rustic colour palette is all the rage this season. 

Opt for accessories in matching colours to keep things co-ordinated, but don’t be afraid to clash textures and shapes.  

MIX PLAIN WITH PRINTS

From snakeprint Chelsea boots to pretty Chinese and floral prints, patterned statement boots are big. 

Team yours with a blockcoloured dress in a similar shade to the background of the pattern. 

Get Julia Roberts’s look by opting for a long midi or maxi length such as H&M’s denim-blue shirt dress (£34.99, hm.com) to draw the eye down to your snazzy shoes. 

This will prevent you from having an awkward strip of your lower calf on display, which can make the legs appear shorter.
