MONEY expert Martin Lewis has revealed his best tips on how to get big results from entering FREE competitions.
So-called comping is the practice of entering competitions as a hobby to win cash or freebies such as holidays.
In yesterday’s episode of The Martin Lewis Money Show on ITV, the founder of consumer site MoneySavingExpert revealed how one mum have won at least £75,000 worth of holidays, cash and prizes this way.
“Everything I’m wearing I’ve won,” Barbara told Martin when she met him at a roadshow.
Barbara, who said she used to win one competition a week, claimed her husband even told her to stop winning holidays as they’d be given so many already.
Their best free holiday, according to Barbara, was a trip to watch the tennis tournament French Open. The prize came with a private box and they got to stay at a five star hotel.
In the episode Martin also heard from viewers who’d won an entire year’s shopping and others who’d won holidays.
Top tips for making money comping
YOU can make a lot of money or get loads of freebies from comping. Below are Martin's and Barbara's top tips for people looking to get started.
- Use a generic email address – one you don’t use for anything else and could be male or female. You should only use it for comping
- Only enter competitions that you actually want to win
- You may have to enter 100 competitions a week to win even one
- Keep track of the competitions you enter so you don’t enter more than once by mistake and invalidate both entries
- Think about getting a “bat-phone”. That’s one that you use only for competitions with a pay as you go Sim card for people to contact you
- Make sure your firewall is up to date and that you have up to date virus software
What is comping?
“Free competitions are a marketing thing,” Martin said in the show.
They’re offered by companies to get their names out there and the idea it to get as many possible people to enter.
That, in turn, means you need to enter a lot of competitions to win regularly.
“Treat it as a hobby, and the win is a bonus,” he said.
Martin pointed out that you’re not alone in the process, and that there are also online tools to help you.
“There’s a brilliant community of compers out there that share information,” he said.
Because they only enter things they want to win, it means they often post other ones they’ve seen to the community.
This, in turn, will help you spot the right competitions for you.
