"Many Photos" - Coppafeel founder Kris Hallenga shares life advice on ten-year cancerversary

A woman who was diagnosed with incurable stage four breast cancer at the age of 23  has shared her life advice on her ten-year 'cancerversary'.

Kris Hallenga, 33, from Cornwall, took to Twitter this week to share a video with her tips for making the most of life, which range from 'dancing to wearing pom-poms' to 'dreaming big'.

Kris founded the breast cancer charity Coppafeel! with her twin sister Maren just one month after she was diagnosed with breast cancer a decade ago.

Having found a lump in her breast, Kris initially struggled to get diagnosed, and the devastating news came almost 12 months after she had first been to the doctor with her concerns.

Statistically, advanced, secondary, stage-four breast cancer usually has a two-to-three-year life expectancy, but Kris just marked a decade since her diagnosis.

To celebrate the occasion, she shared her tips for 'making every day great' on the charity's official Instagram and Twitter accounts on Tuesday.

Speaking in the video she said: 'Ten years ago today, I was diagnosed with 'incurable', stage 4, metastatic, secondary breast cancer and I am not dead. In fact I have never felt so un-dead.

'Being alive is really bloody great and statistics are just numbers.'

The video begins with footage showing Kris battling through a variety of charity challenges, from running a half-marathon to trekking through Iceland along with her first tip: 'Exercise even when you don't feel like it.'

Kris' advice, shared on Twitter this week, includes asking yourself 'would this be more fun if I was wearing pom poms, fancy dress or glitter', to have plenty of fun and express yourself

KRIS' TEN TIPS FOR MAKING EVERY DAY GREAT...

  1. Exercise, even when you don't feel like it

  2. Dream big, like really big!

  3. Don't be intimidated by celebs, or anyone else now that we're on the subject

  4. Take the rough with the smooth - accept that there will always be almighty turds to glitter

  5. Stop worrying about your age, birthdays were made to be celebrated

  6. Express yourself, no really just say what you want

  7. Never under estimate what is possible, with a little bit of passion, determination and a projector

  8. Ask yourself, would this be more fun if I was wearing pom-poms, fancy dress or glitter?

  9. DANCE

  10. Find something you believe in and do it

As clips flash up of Kris stage-diving, her second tip comes up: 'Dream big - like really big.'

With patrons including Fearne Cotton, Greg James and Dermot O'Leary, Kris' third tip - 'don't be intimidated by celebs' - seems particularly relevant to the success of her charity.

She also recommends 'taking the rough with the smooth' and 'celebrating birthdays' as a way to make the most out of life, no matter what.

Her advice also included asking yourself 'would this be more fun if I was wearing pom poms, fancy dress or glitter', to have plenty of fun, express yourself and dance.

Eight most common signs of breast cancer

• A change in size or shape

• A lump or area that feels thicker than the rest of the breast

• A change in skin texture such as puckering or dimpling (like the skin of an orange)

• A redness or rash on the skin and/or around the nipple

• Your nipple has become pulled in or looks different, for example changed its position or shape

• Liquid that comes from the nipple without squeezing

• Pain in your breast or your armpit that’s there all or almost all of the time

• A swelling in your armpit or around your collarbone

The 33 year old also celebrated the anniversary with a huge party for friends and family at the Eden Project in Cornwall. The theme was 'cats around the world'.

The activist posted on Instagram to say Fearne Cotton had organised a huge glittering turd cake, as a reminder that in life sometimes you have to make the most of the worst situation and 'glitter a turd'.

Kris first pitched the idea of a setting up a charity which would help raise awareness for checking for lumps to friends just a month after her diagnosis.

Since then she has had her left breast removed, as well as undergoing chemotherapy and bouts of radiotherapy. The charity now raises more than £1million a year.

Kris, who will never be cancer-free, continues to have monthly check ups at hospital and has now become one of the country's most prolific breast cancer campaigners.

And though the cancer has now spread to her pelvis, hips, liver and brain, the activist recently found out that her 57 brain tumours are shrinking.
