The Sheffield-born journalist smashed down barrier’s as Fleet Street’s first female tabloid sports reporter on the back of her outstanding ability and fearless drive and determination.

But she passed away on Wednesday after a long and dogged battle with cancer at the age of 56, in the company of her ever-supportive husband Ian Ridley.

The funeral of our much-loved athletics correspondent, Vikki Orvice, will take place at 2pm on Tuesday, February 26, at St Leonard’s Church, Flamstead, Herts AL3 8BS

Ian, a successful sports journalist himself, made the journey to Birmingham himself to see the tribute.

He said: “It’s touching that they would stop mid-meeting to make this tribute, which shows just how she was viewed in the sport.

“Vikki came to this event every year because it was an excellent place to speak with the athletes and meet new people and new contacts.

“We knew she was well respected and well liked within sport and the industry, but the tributes and words this week have even taken me by surprise.”

It was the second time she had been struck down by the illness, but she fought the disease which the same guts and determination that had marked her out as special in her career.

Vikki covered a host of sports for The Sun, establishing herself as one of the best and most respected journalists on the circuit.

And in her role as the chief athletics correspondent for the paper, she immersed herself in the sport covering every major championship since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

In that time she built up deep, and trusted, relationships with some of Britain’s best know stars like Paula Radcliffe, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Mo Farah.

Vikki also devoted herself to breaking down the barriers in terms of females working – and thriving – in the previously male-dominated sports journalism industry and was a leading light at the Women In Football organisation.
