New photo US and British consulates among TEN diplomatic offices evacuated in Melbourne

The United States and British consulates are among more than 10 diplomatic offices which have been evacuated after suspicious packages were found.

Packages were found at the Indian, Swiss, German, Italian, Spanish, New Zealand South Korean, Pakistan, Indonesian and Greek consulates in Melbourne and several embassies in Canberra on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire engines are outside the consulates, some of which are on St Kilda Road in the central city.

Two fire trucks, a hazardous materials vehicle and police cars were seen outside the Consulate-General of India on Wednesday afternoon.

An Australian Federal Police spokesperson said emergency services responded to suspicious packages which were delivered to embassies and consulates in Canberra and Melbourne.

The packages reportedly contain white powder laced with asbestos, Nine News reported.

'The packages are being examined by attending emergency services. The circumstances surrounding the incidents are being investigated,' AFP said in a media release.

'As this matter is subject to further inquiries it is not appropriate to provide further information that may impact on the investigation.'

Victoria Emergency's website has 10 'hazardous material' incidents listed on St Kilda Road, Collins Street, Queens Street, Albert Road and William Street near the CBD.

About eight emergency vehicles are in attendance at the locations.

The Metropolitan Fire Brigade is assisting Australian Federal Police, who is the lead agency in the investigation, an MFB spokeswoman said.

Suspicious packages have been found at the locations, 3AW reported.

Staff sat outside the Indian consulate building, telling reporters they had been told not to comment.

The emergency response comes just two days after white powder was found at the Argentinian consulate in Sydney.

The powder was later found to be non-toxic.
