Two men have died in separate falls on wind-lashed Northern Ireland mountains as Britain is set to be hit by the 'Beast from the East 2' which will bring 50mph winds and heavy snow.
The men both died in the Mourne Mountains, Co Down, with one falling from Wee Binnian shortly before midday, and the other falling from Slieve Commedagh just before 1pm.
A third man had to be rescued after falling at around 2.30pm and is believed to have broken his ankle.
The PSNI's Air Support unit described the recovery and rescue operations as 'tough and challenging'.
A tweet said: 'In strong winds we managed to airlift one male out but sadly the two others had died. Our thoughts are with their loved ones.'
It comes as the UK's mild start to the year is set to come to a bitterly cold end as the country is battered by 50mph gusts and temperatures plummet to -10C by next weekend.
The mountains are classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty and are popular with hill walkers.
South Down MP Chris Hazzard expressed his condolences to the families of the two men.

'The tragic news that two men died today while walking in the Mournes will have shocked the entire local community,' said the Sinn Fein representative.
'I'd like to commend Mountain Rescue and the emergency services who responded to today's incidents and who also rescued a third walker who got into difficulties elsewhere in the Mournes.
'My thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of those who tragically died in these incidents in the Mournes today.'
Councillor Jill Macauley, who represents the Mournes area, also extended sympathies.
'Traditionally the trails are busy at weekends with walkers and mountain enthusiasts flocking to enjoy the iconic and scenic surroundings the Mournes has to offer,' said the Ulster Unionist.
'Unfortunately today what is a routine and enjoyable trip for many ended in absolute horror.
'I praise the quick and effective response of the police and emergency services, their professionalism and dedication second to none no matter what difficulties they encounter.'
Police Service of Northern Ireland Inspector Frances McCullough said: 'Police received a request for assistance after a male was reported to have fallen while walking on Wee Binnian shortly before midday and received a further request for assistance after a male was reported to have fallen while walking on Slieve Commedagh shortly before 1pm.
'Police and other emergency services responded but unfortunately both men died at the scene.'
The North East will take the brunt of the fierce winds today and residents could wake up to 2cm of snow and icy patches tomorrow morning.
On the face of it, low temperatures of 8C seem rather mild, but chilly gusts will make it feel more like 4C in parts of Scotland - with the mercury plunging below freezing later tonight.
The rest of country can expect gales of 30-40mph, widespread rain showers and lows of 10C - which will feel a lot colder due to the winds.
Similar weather is expected to persist until Wednesday, when temperatures plunge down to -10C, seeing in heavy rain and snow, according to the Met office.
This afternoon, a Ryanair passenger jet aborted its landing twice and was forced to land 75miles away due to the ferocious winds.
The plane was descending on the runway at Leeds Bradford Airport when it was knocked it off-course by strong gusts.
The flight, from Malta to Leeds Bradford Airport, tried to land twice before diverting to Liverpool.
Met forecaster Marco Petagna said: 'On Wednesday we'll see temperatures in rural areas [in the North East] dipping well below freezing.
'We can expect temperatures to drop to -5C, or even -10C in some patches of Scotland. The risk of snow will be confined to the North Eastr during the working week, but by next weekend there'll be a good chance of widespread snow and frost.'

Heavy snow will be brought in by rain trying to come in off the Atlantic and coming into contact with cold air across the UK.
Forecasters have also warned that an arctic air could turn rain into snow for northern and central parts of the country later this month following a sudden stratospheric warming event.
While weather conditions are expected to remain stable over the next fortnight, the sudden stratospheric warming event in the Arctic, that occurred around Christmas, could lead to a surge of cold air and cooler temperatures for the continent.
Sudden Stratospheric Warming could see the Beast from the East return
Severe conditions that hit Britain in early 2018 were called a 'cocktail of weather events' by the Met Office.
The cold spell dubbed the 'the Beast from the East' - which also coincided with the arrival of Storm Emma - was caused by a jump in temperatures high over the Arctic, known as 'sudden stratospheric warming'.
The phenomenon, which in Britain usually leads to cold periods, begins 30 miles into the atmosphere in the high altitude jet stream, which usually flows from west to east, bringing relatively warm and wet air from the Atlantic into the UK.
A disturbance hits the jetstream, pushing its waves down towards the Arctic and reversing the stream from east to west. As the air is compressed over this region, it begins to warm.
This leads to high pressure over the North Atlantic, blocking the usual flow of mild air that flows into Britain from the west.
Instead, colder air from the east is sucked over the British Isles, resulting in colder temperatures.
