New photo Student, 19, who thought she had ‘freshers flu’ discovers she has terminal brain cancer after routine eye test

A STUDENT thought she had a simple case of “freshers flu” — but an eye test revealed she actually had terminal brain cancer.

Laura Nuttall, 19, started getting headaches and feeling sick just weeks into her International Relations degree at King’s College London in October.

But when she applied to join the Royal Navy Reserves at uni, an eye test revealed she had unexplained swelling in her optic nerve.

The discovery led to her being diagnosed with glioblastomas, the most aggressive form of brain cancer in adults.

Now Laura’s mum Nicola is doing everything in her power to make sure Laura gets to fulfil her bucket list dreams, from seeing Sir Paul McCartney in concert to meeting Everton football players.

Nicola told the MailOnline: “I’m trying anything I can think of to help keep Laura feeling positive. We’re doing as much as we can to make the best possible memories.

“Laura had her whole life ahead of her. Now she is having to cope with the fact that her remaining life will be very short.”

Laura has already had brain surgery to remove the biggest and most life-threatening tumour along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy to battle the cancer.

But the treatment options for glioblastoma are limited, and life expectancy can be as short as three months if the cancer is untreated.

Nicola added: “There’s no effective treatment, as there can be with breast cancer or prostate cancer. It’s a death sentence.”

The Brain Tumour Charity says the average survival time for patients diagnosed with glioblastomas is between 12 and 18 months.

And only a fifth of patients live longer than a year after diagnosis — just three per cent survive for more than three years.

Glioblastoma was the type of cancer which killed former Labour cabinet minister Tessa Jowell last year.

Laura’s family have now started a GoFundMe page to raise funds to be able to give Laura a new treatment for glioblastoma called DCVax.

The treatment, which is yet to be approved in the UK, uses the patient’s own immune cells to fight the tumours.

Now the family’s local community have rallied round to raise cash for the treatment as over £10,000 has been raised by runners at Trawden Athletics Club.

They started the #doingitforlaura campaign for the student, who ran her last marathon last May and received her gold Duke of Edinburgh Award in November.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”

Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
