NEW Stoke boss Nathan Jones was handed a parting gift from Luton after being crowned the League One Manager of the Month for December.

And the ex-Hatters gaffer even posed for pictures holding the award wearing his Potters training kit!

Jones was only unveiled as the new Stoke manager on Wednesday as he headed north to put-pen-to-paper on a three-and-a-half year deal.

Coincidentally it was the same day the Welshman collected his award for helping guide Luton up to second in the table.

Luton won five league matches in December, losing none and drawing two.

It came on the back of three straight victories towards the end of November.

And now the Championship side will be hoping Jones can sprinkle a piece of his magic on their beleaguered side – starting with Brentford away on Saturday.

The promotion hopefuls have slipped to 14th in the table following a disappointing home defeat to Bristol City.

Jones admits that he believes he knows the Championship even better than League One.

Speaking to the Stoke City website, he said: “Ironically, I probably know the Championship better than I know League One and League Two.

“I was at Charlton Athletic for a year and I studied the Championship relentlessly and then when I was at Brighton & Hove Albion for three seasons, I really did study the league.

“Being an assistant manager there I had far more disposable time than I would have now as a manager, so I did a lot of work then, so I really do know the league well.

“So, I have a very good knowledge of the Championship and that is why I felt very comfortable in taking this role on, even though I fully understand the challenges of being successful at this level.

“It is a tough league, it is a Premier League 2, it isn’t a Championship, every game is tough because you are either facing a side battling to survive or facing somebody trying to get into the top six and win promotion.”
