The husband of a British mother who was jailed for five years in Iran on spying charges has spoken of her decision to go on hunger strike to protest a lack of medical treatment in custody.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe announced plans to forgo food at Tehran's Evin Prison to demand medical provisions, alongside a prominent Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi.
Richard Ratcliffe today revealed she had told him 'enough was enough', and it was time to take dramatic action after the failure of political pressure to free her.

He told Good Morning Britain: 'She had been talking about going on hunger strike ever since August when she was freed for three days before being taken back in.
‘We managed to convince her not to, but in the end she said, with respect, enough is enough, this needs to end soon. I’m desperate. I didn’t get consulted but was told the letter was out so there was nothing I could do about it.'
Mr Ratcliffe said treatment has been blocked for lumps in her breasts, neck pains and numbness in her limbs.
‘Ever since she has been brought back in there has been a close-down of any outside medical care,' he said.
Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was permitted a three-day release in August to be briefly reunited with her four-year-old daughter Gabriella
‘She has been referred by a prison doctor for lumps on her breast and problems with her arms and legs. But the prison authorities have deemed she is not going to die in a week so won’t allow it.'
The accountant, who has received widespread praise for his determined and dignified campaign, said he believed Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt was working hard for his wife but was not confident he would get any results.
‘It makes no sense that an innocent woman is being held for no good reason. It is clearly so awful, so what can unlock it? Mr Ratcliffe said.
‘If she does carry on with the hunger strike we are on to nuclear territory, there is nothing else after that.
‘Three days is ok, but four, five, six, seven… I don’t want to cheer that on, but goodness me we have to think about it. It is really bleak.'
Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested in 2016 at Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport and is serving a five-year jail sentence for alleged sedition.
The charity worker from Hampstead, north London, spent her 40th birthday on Boxing Day in prison cut off from her husband and her four-year-old daughter.
Initially arrested in 2015, Mohammadi was sentenced to 10 years in prison for 'forming and managing an illegal group', among other charges.

She was the spokeswoman for the now-outlawed Defenders of Human Rights Centre, which was co-founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi.
'We are severely disturbed and concerned by this prevention of specialist care approved by the prison doctor and strongly protest against it,' Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Mohammadi said in their joint letter, originally published on Ebadi's website.
'In protest to this illegal, inhuman and unlawful behaviour, and to express our concerns for our health and survival at this denial of specialist treatment, despite taking daily medicines, we will go on hunger strike from January 14 to 16.
'We are urging for an immediate action to be taken.
'We announce that in the event of the authorities failure to address these concerns and them further endangering our health, we will take further actions.
'The authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran are to be held responsible for the potential consequences.'

Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe's four-year-old daughter Gabriella has been staying with family in Iran since her mother was detained.

Mr Ratcliffe told GMB she sometimes forgets about him due to their time apart, and thinks both of her parents are in prison.
He has mounted a high-profile campaign for his wife's release, branding her detention a 'travesty of justice'.
Jeremy Hunt has been vocal on the case, and tweeted yesterday: 'Nazanin is innocent and must be allowed to come home.
'How can the Iranian authorities allow an innocent mother to feel she needs to resort to this, simply for justice and access to medical care?'
He pressed his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Zarif, about the case in September when they met in New York on the fringes of a United Nations General Assembly.
The month before, Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been granted a three-day release to see her daughter but her request for an extension was denied and she was forced to say goodbye to Gabriella again and return to jail.
