New photo David Attenborough defends decision to save penguins in BBC Dynasties show as cameraman did not touch them

SIR David Attenborough has defended the rescue of penguins in an episode of his show Dynasties.

The broadcaster, 92, insisted that a cameraman was right to assist the stranded animals.

The broadcaster had initially criticised the decision, saying the crew should have let nature take its course.

But changing his mind, he said: “You aren’t actually touching the animal. All the cameraman did was to just make a little groove in the ice, so that the penguin could get a foothold and get out of the hole.”

But he admitted that he would not interfere with a hunt should he see an animal about to be killed by a predator.

Millions watched the group of emperor penguins become stranded during a harsh Antarctic winter during November’s show.

However the BBC revealed the crew decided to act, digging a shallow ramp.
