Commuters to Edinburgh are best off financially by living in the east of Glasgow - in Motherwell - , according to the research. It has the lowest costs of £5,639 and a 48-minute commute.

In third and second place are Falkirk at £5,986 and Carluke at £6,126.

Coastal Delmany is the priciest commuter hotspot at £10,366 but comes with a convenient travel time of 20 minutes.

Zoopla's Annabel Dixon said: 'As the new season ticket prices come into effect, much to the anguish of thousands of commuters across the UK, those looking to relocate may wish to pay close attention to these figures. Although over the past decade we've seen significant property price growth in prime London commuter belt towns, the data shows pockets across South East England that represent best value for commuters.

'Although the north is generally more affordable, it's worth weighing up the length of the commute. For example, living in Burnley is most affordable for those commuting to Manchester, but you can travel to the city centre half an hour quicker from Rochdale, where property is slightly more expensive.'

It comes on the back of separate research from Jackson-Stops that identified Luton in Bedfordshire as London's commute hotspot for this year.

It said Luton took home the crown thanks to its average property price of £253,988 and strong rail performance rating.

Nick Leeming, Jackson-Stops' chairman, said: 'Although rail fares have not increased as much as they did at the start of 2018, commuters across the country are still unlikely to be impressed with the 3.1% price hike. Those looking to move this year will be carefully considering a raft of factors, from the impact of Brexit to the average house price of area - but for those commuters among us the time, cost and reliability associated with travelling into London by train will be a key concern.

'One area which continues to outperform other surrounding London commuter locations is Luton, which benefits from as little as a 27 minute journey time to the city, comparatively low property prices and consistent house price growth.

'With the Bedfordshire town benefitting from significant inward investment over the next 20 years, we can only expect Luton to continue being a key spot for commuters and investors.'
