"Many Photos" - Victoria's nude swim scene was not included to 'sex up' the show

A naked swim scene in Victoria was not included to 'sex up' the show but to add to its historical accuracy, the show's writer has said.

The episode, which aired on Sunday, featured the Queen's footman Joseph Weld as he stripped of his clothes and strode into the sea stark naked.

And Daisy Goodwin said the scene was included to remind the viewer that 'he's a man underneath all the lead and the goose paint', the Telegraph reported.

She said: 'The artistic justification is that Joseph is trussed up in this ridiculous livery and awful wig all day and its his moment of freedom - to remind us that he's a man underneath all the lead and the goose paint.

'I have to say it's historically correct for him to be swimming naked. Men in the 19th century didn't have bathing suits.'

The screenwriter added it took 'a lot of blankets and brandy' for actor David Burnett to film the daring scene - but confirmed there is no more 'naked stuff' in the series.

Daisy, who previously worked as a television producer on Channel 4's The Sex Inspectors, also rebuked claims that Joseph's character had been added to 'sex up' the ITV show.

She said: 'God no. I wanted this storyline... but I'm not particularly interested in nudity on screen.'

The screenwriter's comments come after she claimed Victoria 'is the sexiest thing I have ever written' - despite it not having contained 'a single graphic scene' at the time.

Writing for the Daily Mail in 2016, Daisy said: 'I'd say the historical drama Victoria — my latest TV 'baby', which attracted 7.7 million viewers — is the sexiest thing I have ever written.

'And there wasn't a single graphic scene in it: no chandeliers swung, no bodices ripped and certainly no breeches torn asunder.

'And, as I embark on writing the script for the second series of Victoria, I've come to a rather shocking conclusion for someone who considers themselves a liberal; there is too much sex on TV and we don't need the half of it.'

The screenwriter also claimed graphic sex scenes can often 'interrupt the action' - and said 'nothing is lost' by not seeing the act itself.

She said: 'There is one scene in episode six where a newlywed Victoria and Albert have clearly just had sex and she sneaks out of the marital bed as he falls asleep, to jump up and down in an attempt to avoid pregnancy.

'The viewer doesn't see the act, but it's a funny scene, I think, and makes it clear what's just happened.

'Was anything lost by not seeing it? I don't think so.'

The latest episode of Victoria saw the debut of the long-awaited 'bathing machine' scene.

In the brief moment that saw Jenna Coleman's monarch almost drown, a fitting metaphor began to emerge as she struggled to stay afloat in a sea of marital woes.

Victoria's clashes with Albert continued as they battled over foreign affairs, their child's schooling and general status quo, and as predicted last week, it seems this is only the beginning when it comes to tension in the royal couples' marriage.
