"Many Photos" - Slow-motion footage captures the deadly power of a firefighter's worst nightmare - the backdraft

The deadly power of a firefighter's worst nightmare - the backdraft - has been demonstrated in terrifying slow-motion footage.

The danger occurs when there is the sudden reintroduction of oxygen into an enclosed space containing a fire. 

Youtubers The Slow Mo Guys demonstrated it by re-creating a house fire - with a violent jet of smoke and flames the result. 

This is the moment that Youtubers the Slow Mo Guys set re-create a house fire inside a shipping container to demonstrate the deadly power of a firefighter's worst nightmare - the backdraft. The container is fitted with a Go Pro camera sitting inside flameproof housing

With the help of Travis County fire department, in Texas, they fill a shipping container fitted with windows and doors with a sofa, wooden panelling and a Christmas tree.

A Go Pro camera is placed in the corner of the container inside a fireproof housing.  

Outside and in line with the door are wooden markers topped with marshmallows to measure how far the backdraft reaches. 

After a few minutes of allowing a fire to develop, firefighters move to cut off oxygen to the space by closing the windows and the top and then the bottom part of the door. 

The fire gets so hot that the Go Pro camera stops recording, despite having the protection of its flame-proof enclosure.  

With the flames now mostly killed off, the top half of the door is opened again.

After a few minutes of allowing a fire to develop, firefighters move to cut off oxygen to the space by closing the windows and the top and then the bottom part of the door. With the flames now mostly killed off, the top half of the door is opened again and this allows oxygen to flood back into the room. A firefighter is caught unawares by the sudden explosion of smoke and flames that shoot out of the door. And the moment is captured on slow-motion film

This allows oxygen to rush back in to the container and at first, little happens, with only smoke pouring out.  

A firefighter moves towards the door just before the moment of explosion and he only just gets out of its path.   

It is caused by the new flood of oxygen into the room, with a violent jet of smoke and flames shooting 'at least 40ft' out of the door and singing the marshmallows. 

The Slow Mo guys explain that firefighters do everything they can to avoid the backdraft, which can develop when a fire's temperature exceeds 649C.

A fire depletes all the oxgyen in a room and dies down so that there are only embers. 

A window may then break or a door fly open, which 'causes a sudden rush of oxygen into the room.' 

'Which then causes a very deadly explosion,' they add.   

The firefighters then create another backdraft by closing and then re-opening the windows and doors.  

The Youtubers' Phantom Flex 4k camera, which costs more than £80,000, captures the sight in slow-motion.

'It's like a dragon,' one of the Slow Mo guys exclaims. 'I can imagine a shuttle on the other end of it, except there is is nothing there' 

This time, it is an even more violent explosion, with a bulbous jet of smoke shooting out of the door, expanding the further it goes.

'I can imagine a shuttle on the other end of it, except there is nothing there'.
