More than 10,000 riot-trained police can be deployed within 24 hours if disorder breaks out over a no-deal Brexit, top officers say. 

Some 1,000 will be available in the first hour - more than were mobilised during the 2011 London riots - and specialist teams such as dog handlers, armed police and search-trained officers, can be called upon.

So far 15 forces have placed restrictions on annual leave, and two have officially asked for mutual aid – Kent, which covers the port of Dover, and Hampshire, which covers Portsmouth.

Currently 1,000 have received extra training so that they can be deployed to Northern Ireland if needed. 

The police there use armoured Land Rovers and water cannon, unlike their mainland counterparts. 

Forces are expected to cut down on 'peripheral police activity' like crime prevention work  and to cancel training if needed.

Local resilience forums, which include representatives from councils and the police, have carried out training exercises to deal with shortages, and police training has included dealing with disorder including looting.

Revealing the figures, Martin Hewitt, National Police Chiefs’ Council chairman, urged campaigners and politicians should watch their language to avoid inflaming the 'incredibly febrile' atmosphere around Brexit.

He said that public figures should be wary of 'consequences that weren't intended' when speaking about the issue.

Addressing journalists during a briefing at the National Police Co-ordination Centre, he said: 'This is highly emotive as an issue as we all know and clearly everyone will have their opinions.

'But I think there is a responsibility on those individuals that have a platform and have a voice, to communicate in a way that is temperate and is not in any way going to inflame people's views.'

It comes as MPs were warned they may have made an 'accidental No Deal' more likely after they demanded a further Brexit delay last night.

The Commons hurried through a bill, which passed by just one vote, forcing the Prime Minister to seek an extension if she cannot agree a deal with Jeremy Corbyn.

The backbench bill was meant to prevent a No Deal Brexit on April 12, but Brexit minister Robin Walker warned it could have the opposite effect.

Last night's vote means that if the PM fails to make a deal with the Labour leader she will have to ask the EU for more time - which then has to be agreed by MPs with a vote.

The PM would be expected to get an extension with the EU at a European Council meeting on April 10 and MPs would vote to support it the following day.

However, Mr Walker warned that this would not leave enough time time to complete the necessary paperwork before the UK is scheduled to leave the EU on April 12.

Speaking in the Commons last night Mr Walker said he feared an accidental No Deal on April 12 if there was not enough time to complete these extra steps.

The Brexit minister said there is a 'real risk created by this bill that we could be timed out'.

He said the Bill 'actually increases the likelihood of an accidental No Deal - an outcome which this House has repeatedly voted against'.
