"Many Photos" - My lightbulb moment: Looeeze Grossman, 55, reveals the inspiration behind starting kitchen business

Looeeze Grossman, 55, set up The Used Kitchen Company in 2005. It sells used and ex-display kitchens. She lives in North London and is married to Paul, who works in IT. She has three children aged 22, 20 and 17.

Fourteen years ago I was working in event planning. I’d had my children and realised organising parties that went on until 3am didn’t work well when I was getting up at 5am for the kids. So I started selling anything for anyone on eBay.

I had a company called Under The Hammer. I’d drop my kids at school and nursery, run somewhere and take photos of random pieces of furniture, then sell them on eBay.

I’d spend my evenings wrapping them in brown paper, ready for me to drop off at the post office.

Then someone asked: ‘Could you sell my kitchen?’ I said I’d give it a go. I realised selling kitchens was a great recycling opportunity.

At the time, there was a lot of news about landfill sites struggling with the amount of waste. I thought we could build a useful green business.

I sold that ten-year-old oak kitchen for £4,000. To source other kitchens. I asked showrooms: ‘What do you do with your clients’ old kitchens?’ They said: ‘We skip them.’

They began giving them to me to sell and I’d take a percentage of the sale. Then they asked if I could sell their ex-display kitchens, as they just ended up in storage.

So The Used Kitchen Company (TUKC) was born. Two years ago, TV presenter Kevin McCloud nominated us as one of his Green Heroes for Grand Designs Live, which made a huge difference.

We’ve saved £37million of kitchens over the years, because our kitchens are sold at 50-70 per cent lower than the original recommended retail price.

But it’s not just about the money. People genuinely want to use a recycled kitchen. We ship a lot of painted kitchens to people in France — apparently the ones over there aren’t up to much.

Two of my kids are at university; one writes my blogs and they help when they’re on holiday. The younger generation is becoming far more interested in sustainability.

Funnily enough, I lived with a 20-year-old kitchen myself. It was in our house when we bought it, and stayed there until last year.

Then I, too, got my dream kitchen. I bought a part-display kitchen and added to it. I sold the old one through TUKC, but it was older than most I sell.

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. We feel like the Robin Hoods of the kitchen industry.
