JEREMY Hunt has been accused of being two-faced on Brexit by Cabinet rivals.

The Foreign Secretary is said to have backed a no-deal exit in the first of the crunch Cabinet meetings on Tuesday.

But he then changed tack in the second session and favoured an extension to Article 50, it is claimed.

It has sparked allegations that he was “positioning himself politically” ahead of the battle to succeed Theresa May as Tory leader.

Writing in The Sun today, columnist James Forsyth reveals: “Several of Hunt’s Cabinet colleagues say that in the morning’s political Cabinet, he was leaning into no deal.

“But that in the afternoon session, he took a softer line. One Cabinet minister accuses Hunt of ‘trying to play both ends’.”

By contrast, Home Secretary Sajid Javid is said to have been one of those who “chose to be a grown-up” in Cabinet.

And a third Secretary of State joked that if there had been a third meeting, Hunt would have taken a different position again.

Allies of leadership contender Mr Hunt are “furious” about these briefings.

They say that in the morning meeting, he was simply arguing that in order to get Brexit through the Commons, the Government must present it as a stark choice between Mrs May’s deal and no deal.

At a meeting of G7 foreign ministers in France yesterday, Mr Hunt warned that a no-deal Brexit could push the whole bloc into economic downturn.

“None of our economies are growing fast enough to guarantee that a no-deal scenario wouldn’t push us into a recession. So it’s a bad outcome all round,” he said.

The international human rights lawyer, wife of actor George, said she was “honoured”.

Mr Hunt told G7 foreign ministers meeting in Dinard, France, that she was “ideally placed” to ensure a campaign to safeguard journalists has “real impact”.
