Goodbye to darling Fleabag, who wiped her tears dry before leaving us last night with a smile and a final wave.
With only one backward glance she strode off into the night and a future that seemed to hold a spark of promise, at last.
It might not have been a happy ending, it was very far from a fairytale ending, but it was absolutely the perfect ending.
Tearful: Fleabag (Phoebe Waller- Bridge) and her priest (Andrew Scott) confess their feelings in last night's episode. Apparently after only two series, there is to be no more Fleabag
Writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who also stars as Fleabag herself, gave us a finale that was redemptive, unsentimental and beautiful. There were no dramatic shocks, thank goodness.
No unlikely bolts from heaven on high and no histrionics, unless you count the implosion of creepy brother-in-law Martin (Brett Gelman) when Claire (Sian Clifford) told him she was leaving.
'I'm not a bad guy, I just have a bad personality,' he roared, before erroneously and egotistically concluding that 'the thing you hate most about yourself is that you actually love me'.
And no, Fleabag did not end up with her hot priest (Andrew Scott) because that would have been too ridiculous, like The Thorn Birds meets Bad Bridget Jones.
'I can't have sex with you because I will fall in love with you. I won't burst into flames, but my life will be ruined,' he told her.
Fleabag's father told her that she knew 'how to love better than any of us, that's why you find it all so painful'. She seemed to find it less painful than she did, which gives us all hope for the future
He did, he did, he didn't and it wasn't.
For the longest time, I suspected he was a fake priest; some damaged apostate who would lead our girl down the rocky road of gins-in-tins and mendacity until they grilled together in hell.
Yet Waller-Bridge is far too clever for that. He turned out to be a real man of the cloth and one who wanted to keep his cloth on, despite their sizzling mutual attraction.
'It's God, isn't it?', Fleabag asked him at the end, suspecting he had chosen the ways of the Lord rather than the sins of their flesh.
And by God it was, leaving them both in tears at a bus stop, while confessing their love for each other.
Yet being turned down in this way proved ultimately cathartic for Fleabag, who is kinder and less selfish than before. Finding herself worthy of love and capable of feeling love seemed to mend her broken soul.
So emotional! Yet also so hilarious. The wedding of Fleabag's father (Bill Paterson) to her loathed godmother (Olivia Colman) was a patchwork of comic joy, from the painting of the sisters displayed on the lawn, to the socially progressive guests and the priest's deranged homily.

'Be strong and take heart,' he thunderously concluded, which might be the message of the entire series.
The sisters realised how much they loved each other ('You are the only person I would run through an airport for') and there was a rapprochement of sorts in the newly blended family.

Not even a Christmas special? I don't think we are ready to say goodbye for ever to this wonderful character just yet.
