BRUSSELS has warned fish and chips could be off the menu if Britain doesn’t grant access to its waters for EU boats after a no deal Brexit.

Top eurocrats said the UK cannot catch as much white fish from its own seas as it consumes every year, putting the traditional dish in danger.

They said this would mean Britain having to import large quantities subject to tariffs, driving up the cost of the nation’s favourite takeaway meal.

A senior EU official said: “What would happen to fish and chips? It’s quite simple, any fish the UK doesn’t catch it would have to import.

“Then that would become a trade issue. Currently the UK consumes more white fish than it could catch in its own waters.”

EU officials believe a no deal Brexit in which Britain bars European fishing boats from accessing it waters would be the “worst case scenario”.

It has proposed a deal that would maintain the current situation, with the UK continuing to honour its EU quotas until at least the end of the year.

Member States are also demanding that Britain signs up to permanently granting EU boats fishing rights in return for a trade deal with the bloc.

The UK only catches 5 per cent of the cod its population eats every year and imports all the rest – much of it from the continent.
