SURFER-BOY Harry Thacker is used to riding big waves.
But this season it’s the new wave of player that the Bristol Bears star has been cruising in on.

After leaving Leicester Tigers in the summer the pocket-rocket has brought his free-flowing front-row play to Ashton Gate where boss Pat Lam lets him play like he’s on the beach.
And today’s West Country derby in South West London will be no exception for a player who continues to help set the trend for hair-raising hookers – following in the footsteps of the likes fo Schalk Brits and England’s Jamie George.
New breed Thacker, just 5ft 9ins, said: “If I were to look into a crystal ball – I think the game is changing.
“I think it will always be a physical game. But with the new law changes, tackle heights, things like that and the way people are trying to adapt the game to protect the players, it will be more open and fast-flowing.

“I think it’s great with the game how it is – there’s a lot of the time with ball in play. It doesn’t matter what number you have on your back and it’s a good way for the game to go.
ACES CUT HOOD LINK
EXCLUSIVE by Jonny Fordham
RUGBY stars managed by Gordon Hood are flocking to cut their links with the sleazy agent.
Hood, 39, has been placed on the sex offenders register and given an eight-month community order under supervision.
Law grad Hood admitted sexting a ‘girl’ he thought was just 15 years old.
SunSport understands high-profile stars Finn Russell and Stuart Hogg left him immediately.
But less well-known clients, such as Premiership club players and England women’s Grand Slam Six Nations stars, are understood to be seeking the help of the Rugby Players’ Association.
If the RFU were to strike Hood off their list and prevent him from working here, then they would most likely form an independent disciplinary panel to press forward their case against him.
“The more players that can have that ability, the better. Maybe I’m a bit biased though. It is so competitive now, though, so players are trying to get that advantage over their rivals.

“So that means if you’re, say a prop and you’re on par with another prop at scrummaging, you might look to bring more around the pitch. That guy will be selected over the other one and players are striving to be better.
“I think it is what the fans want to see, it is more attacking rugby and the attacking sides generally get the advantage.”
Twickenham boss Eddie Jones predicted during the Six Nations that the game would soon have hybrid players who can do all the tricks as well as bread and butter basics like Thacker.
Thacker’s theatrics haven’t earned him a call from Jones yet, but at just 25 the Test door isn’t closed on the former Red Rose under-20 by any means.

And with this being just his first full campaign after he failed to make his mark one the Tigers, the Bears look like they are getting the best out of Thacker.
He said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this season, I’ve learnt a lot about my game and also playing week-in, week-out.

“Before I would play a game and then have a month or two months off. Now it’s a big run-in, but throughout all the season we have only been looking up.
“We know we are good enough to go toe-to-toe with anyone. We know when we get it all right we are a bloody good team.
“You can’t look too far ahead with the table how it is. Otherwise you will get caught out in this league and right now that can be the difference between fifth or ninth, tenth.”
Life both on and off the pitch has been a beach.

And unsurprisingly that is where Leicester lad Thacker will head once the season is over with his young family in their camper van.
Asked if he still got a few early-morning surfs in during the season, he looked over his shoulder, checked his boss wasn’t listening in and said: “Yes. . . it’s good active recovery!
“Life is good down here at Bristol and I love it. It is very different to being up north. . .up north. . . I can’t believe I just said that!”
