IT’S a small but select field for Thursday’s Betway Bowl and it doesn’t lack any star quality.
Four of the field contested the Gold Cup, while the other two headed for the Ryanair at the Festival. It’s a showstopper.
1. Balko Des Flos – Henry De Bromhead/Rachael Blackmore (33-1)
Well beaten on all four starts this season and ran poorly here last season after Ryanair win.
Hard to give even a sniff too and very much the outsider of the field.
2. Bristol De Mai – Nigel Twiston-Davies/Daryl Jacob (3-1)
Has proven he’s no one-trick pony this season and very much a live contender as the betting suggests.
Rain would be welcome in his camp and certainly has no stamina doubts.
His Gold Cup third would out him bang there, although he needs to prove he wasn’t just picking off tired horses.

3. Clan Des Obeaux – Paul Nicholls/Harry Cobden (15-8)
A deserved favourite, but still has plenty to prove especially after such a hard race at the Festival.
Was third in this last season and has improved greatly this campaign.
The one to beat, but by no means a certainty.
4. Elegant Escape – Colin Tizzard/Tom O’Brien (20-1)
Still seems best suited by a real test of stamina and not sure this is his cup of tea.
Will jump all day and certainly be staying on come the end of the race but hard to see him troubling the fancied runners.
Could try and make all in a small field and can’t rule out completely for those purposes.

5. Kemboy – Willie Mullins/Ruby Walsh (5-2)
Likely to be one of the fresher horses here after his early Gold Cup tumble.
Will have plenty of fans from Ireland and had been in red hot form before the Festival.
Was well fancied prior to the Gold Cup and this will show whether he’s a real top class horse.
6. Road To Respect – Noel Meade/Sean Flanagan (9-2)
A decent third in the Ryanair but never really looked like winning.
Back up in trip again, but has form lines to make up with Kemboy.
Good ground will suit Noel Meade’s horse better than most, but at the odds on offer I’d be looking elsewhere.
