"Many Photos" - Wembley to show overturned VAR decisions on giant screens for first time at FA Cup semi-finals

FANS at this weekend’s Wembley FA Cup semi-finals will be shown overturned VAR decisions for the first time.

In a change of policy, the FA has agreed the stadium’s giant screens will be used to help explain why calls have been changed.

While VAR has been in operation this season at FA Cup games staged at Premier League grounds, fans in the stadia have only been informed that a review was ongoing and then the outcome of it.

That has seen fans using their phones to find out what was actually being reviewed and the reasons for decisions — or wait until after they had left the ground.

The decision to only use technology at Premier League grounds has been controversial, with Manchester City benefiting from TWO wrong calls in their Cup quarter-final comeback win at Championship side Swansea.

City got a penalty for a foul on Raheem Sterling, even though the Swans felt Cameron Carter- Vickers won the ball.

And in the 88th minute, Sergio Aguero scored from an offside position.

Both goals would almost certainly have been ruled out if VAR was in use.

If calls in Saturday’s semi between City and Brighton, or Sunday’s clash featuring Watford and Wolves, are changed on review, the Wembley screens will be used to show why the original decision was overturned.

That will allow supporters to see goals, penalties and red cards.

But the screens will not be used if the initial on- field call by the referee or his assistants is upheld.

Referees’ bosses at the PGMOL see this weekend as a useful trial ahead of next season’s full adoption of VAR in the Prem.

But it will not be used in the Championship play-off final, despite a £180m windfall for the winners.

The decision was taken because VAR has not been used during the season, yet goal-line technology will be in operation for the match on May 27.
