Ruth Jones held on to the seat for Labour after the death of Paul Flynn, but both Labour and the second-placed Tories saw their vote share drop sharply, to 39.6 per cent and 31.3 per cent respectively.

The Welsh constituency is a Labour stronghold and backed Leave in the Brexit referendum.

But voter turnout plummeted from 67.5 per cent to a paltry 37 per cent maid anger at the failure of MPs to get on and deliver Brexit.
