A TEENAGE boy was left with horrific scars on his chest and is lucky to have his sight after an iPhone 6 battery exploded in his face.

Jay Watson, 15, from Brisbane, Australia, was fiddling with the battery on Sunday night when it burst into blame.

He was tampering with the battery on an iPhone when it suddenly exploded

Battery acid spilled onto his chest leaving his skin scarred

The blast singed his hair before spraying corrosive battery acid on his chest.

Jay told 7News: “I wanted to see what was inside.

“I just bent it and once I did it just exploded… It was a bang and then a huge flame of fire.”

His mother Kari Lashbrook said she heard him scream in agony and immediately phoned an ambulance.

The lad was rushed to Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital and bandaged up before being released.

Doctors told him he was lucky the acid hadn’t landed on his face or eyes.

Kari said: “He could have lost his eyesight if the splats of acid hit his eyes as opposed to his chest.”

The volatile nature of the components used to make lithium ion batteries have led to phone manufactures and authorities issuing warnings to customers.

Jay added: “I probably should have Googled it first.”

Last year shocking dashcam footage captured the moment an iPhone exploded inside a woman’s car as she drove on a busy Chinese highway.
