OLLY Murs is probably best known for being a judge on The Voice – but it was The X Factor that transformed the cheeky chappy Essex boy into a star.
Ever since his time with Simon Cowell, he hasn’t been out of the limelight for long – from appearances on TV to charity football games. Here’s how Olly has stayed relevant almost a decade after his big break…
Who is Olly Murs?
He was born Oliver Stanley Murs on May 14, 1984, in Witham, Essex, to Vicky-Lynn and Pete Murs.
He has a twin brother named Ben and a sister called Fay.
He was educated in Braintree and played for the school football team and then played semi-professionally for Witham Town from 2006 to 2008, but an injury forced him to give up on his football career.
He worked for a local recruitment consultancy and used to perform in a covers band called Small Town Blaggers with his friend Jon Goodey.
Olly famously fell out with his twin Ben when his brother’s wedding clashed with him taking part in The X Factor semi-final.
How did Olly Murs become famous?
Olly Murs first came to the public’s attention on The X Factor.
In 2009, he sang Stevie Wonder’s Superstition in his audition, which wowed the judges – Simon Cowell, Dannii Minogue, Louis Walsh and Cheryl Cole.
He had previously tried to make it on the show twice but failed to get through to the audition stage.
Olly progressed to the final during which he duetted with his idol Robbie Williams – who fluffed his lines as he came on stage but recovered with Olly’s help.
Olly lost the coveted X Factor crown to Joe McElderry but signed a joint contract with Epic Records and Syco Music and released his debut single Please Don’t Let Me Go in August 2010.
It went straight to the top of the singles chart and he’s been on the up ever since.
How successful has Olly Murs been since ?
Olly has gone on to record and release four more albums, all of which have gone platinum and straight to the top of the album chart.
He also had eight top ten singles, four of which were Number One.

He then co-hosted the eighth and ninth series of the Xtra Factor with Caroline Flack before they took over from Dermot O’Leary to present the twelfth series of the main show.
Both he and Caroline quit at the end of the run.
He has also starred as a coach on The Voice for the 2018 series and played for the Soccer Aid England squad for the fifth time in a row.
In November 2018 Olly released his latest album You Know I Know.
