They are as old as sport itself and different for every individual player, and now an AFL star has been outed for his bizarre pre-game ritual.

Ahead of their sudden death finals match against the red hot Melbourne Demons, West Coast Eagles defender Tom Barrass spoke about pre-game rituals in the team locker room.

Barrass was on Triple M's Rush Hour with Lisa and Pete on Friday when he made the confession.

'Jacko [Jackson] Nelson always wears red undies, but Jeremy McGovern bites his toenails,' he said.

'We'll all be sitting around, putting our boots on, having a yarn and stretching, and Gov's sitting here gnawing on his toenails.'

'He's got it [flexibility] in him, hopefully it's something you never have to see but it's unfortunately burnt into my brain.'

Pre-game rituals have been a staple of sport for generations.

Whether it was Steve Waugh's pink handkerchief that he had with him at every game, or superstar Lebron James throwing chalk into the air, elite athletes have always been known for their superstitions and rituals.

Other pre-game rituals from AFL players include Collingwood's Jordan Russell who has to be the first one to get a massage before each game.

Or Essendon's Ben Howlett who wears the same pair of underwear for every game, one would assume freshly washed.

And then there is Hawthorn superstar forward Jarryd Roughead who has to hug every team mate before a game.

If McGovern's peculiar ritual pays off and the Eagles overcome the Demons on Saturday night they will head into the Grand Final.

Their opponents will be decided on Friday when Richmond clash with Collingwood for the other spot in the 2018 AFL Grand Final.
