BRITS face travel mayhem today after Storm Bronagh slammed into the UK with 76mph winds – but the miserable weather isn’t over yet.

The storm sparked a “danger to life” weather warning with monster gales and rain wreaking havoc last night.

And blustery winds and heavy rain will continue today with a yellow weather warning in place today until 9am for fallen trees and flying debris.

Bronagh – the second named storm of the year – caused nearly half a month’s rain fall in 24 hours in Sheffield while more than half a month’s rain fell in Sennybridge in Wales.

In south-west Wales there were 12 flood warnings in place on Friday morning, with nearly 40 flood alerts issued across the country, while there were individual warnings in place in Staffordshire, Chesterfield and South Yorkshire, with more than 30 alerts across the north of England and West Midlands.

And strong winds buffeted the UK as the storm spread across England with today’s yellow warning in place for most of the UK.

Gusts of up to 65mph have been predicted today after the UK was battered by monster 75mph winds overnight.

The storm has caused travel chaos with the A1 near Gonerby Moor in Lincolnshire closed this morning as recovery crews work to remove a lorry that left the carriageway.

Flooding on the M6 at Crewe forced a slip road to be closed for several hours, while speed restrictions were put in place on trains across Wales and the west and north of England.

In Wales, a landslip in the Dinas Rhondda blocked the railway line between Ystrad Rhondda and Porth, while a tree stopped trains between Carmarthen and Milford Haven.

There were also reports of delays at Manchester Airport due to windy conditions.

Met Office forecaster Rachel West said: “Storm Bronagh is moving towards the north and east and we are going to continue to see strong, blustery and gusty north-westerly winds.

“We are looking at gusts of between 45 and 55mph across the UK and associated with that some heavy showers with some hail and thunder.”

The miserable weather is set to continue into the weekend with another yellow weather warning in place for wind on Sunday until 9am on Monday.

Tomorrow will start off chilly with rain pushing north-eastwards across England and Wales.

Met Office forecaster Alex Deakin said: “Showers will fade and it looks like it could be a dry start to the weekend.

“However there is another bump in the cloud and that is potentially more wet and windy weather heading our way for the weekend.

“There will likely be further wet and windy weather across the south, while northern areas could be drier.”

Highways England’s Head of Road Safety, Richard Leonard, added: “We’re encouraging drivers to check the latest weather and travel conditions before setting off on journeys.

“If you do intend to travel, then plan your journey and take extra care, allowing more time for your journey.

“In high winds, there’s a particular risk to lorries, caravans and motorbikes so we’d advise drivers of these vehicles to slow down.

“Drivers of other vehicles should be aware of sudden gusts of wind which can affect handling and braking, and give high-sided vehicles, caravans, and motorbikes plenty of space.”

It comes after Storm Ali crashed into the UK on Wednesday bringing 102mph winds and leaving more than 170,000 people without power.

A woman, named locally as Swiss tourist Elvira Ferraii, died after the caravan she was sleeping in was blown off a cliff near Clifden in Co Galway.

And an engineer, aged in his 20s, was then killed by a falling tree in Slieve Gullion Forest Park in Newry, Northern Ireland.

A woman in Cheshire was seriously injured when a tree fell on to her car in the high winds – fire crews eventually freed the woman before she was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

Planes were also grounded and roads closed as the strong winds swept across the UK and Ireland yesterday with a danger to life warning issued.

Train routes throughout Scotland were suspended after overhead wires were damaged and trees fell on the line – with morning services are expected to be disrupted.

The clean-up is now beginning across Scotland, with trees and debris being removed from roads and engineers working overnight to restore power lines.
