ROTHERHAM Council will name a square in the town after its most famous exports… the Chuckle Brothers.

The move will pay tribute to the pair after one half of the duo, Barry Elliott, died last month, aged 73, from bone cancer having kept the illness a secret so he could carry on performing.

And the proposal has the blessing of brother Paul, 70.

He said: “Nothing would give Barry, me and our Yorkshire families more pride than Chuckle Square.

“If anyone asked for directions they would have to be given them by saying: ‘To you, from me’.”

The Rotherham-born brothers won the talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1967 and went on to forge a career in TV and on the stage.

Fans were left shocked after hearing news of Barry’s death in August.

The pair had been filming their return to TV with Channel 5 show Chuckle Time when Barry fell ill earlier this year.

The duo’s summer schedule was cancelled by doctors for a period of rest but his condition deteriorated.

Chuckle Time was screened in June and will now remain the brothers’ last appearances on screen.

Barry had been too ill to attend his brother Jimmy Patton’s wedding last April but bounced back to start filming the new show – more than 50 years after first appearing on screen.
