"Many Photos" - Joyful Arsenal fans revel in ‘Spursy’ Tottenham defeat and begin making plans for ‘St Totteringham’s Day’

JOYFUL Arsenal fans revelled in another “Spursy” Tottenham defeat and have now begun making plans to celebrate “St Totteringham’s Day” after a two-year absence.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were set to claim a deserved point at Anfield before Toby Alderweireld inadvertently bundled into his own net after a howler from Hugo Lloris.

The result continued Tottenham’s recent dismal Premier League run, with the 1-1 draw in the North London derby their only point in their last five fixtures.

At the beginning of February, Spurs were challenging for the title but four successive away defeats have seen them slip back into the race for a Champions League spot.

The most recent of which could be considered cruel as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield after an Alderweireld stoppage-time own-goal.

The result means Tottenham remain in third place, but losses to Burnley, Chelsea, Southampton, and the Reds have now left them just one point ahead of Arsenal.

St Totteringham’s Day 2019

The Gunners, who were 12 points behind their fierce rivals before that losing run, can now go two points clear of Mauricio Pochettino’s side should they beat Newcastle.

This meant Arsenal fans were understandably delighted at another costly Spurs defeat, with one fan writing: “St Totteringham’s Day 2019 is on lads.”

Twitter user Max Meads agreed with that post, as he wrote: “Anyone fancy meeting up for drinks for St Totteringham’s Day this year?”

That day is the name given by Arsenal fans to the date that Spurs can no longer reach the same number of points as them, therefore are guaranteed to finish below them in the table.

Spurs have finished ahead of the Gunners in each of the last two seasons, meaning celebrations for St Totteringham’s Day have had to be cancelled.

But after the defeat to Liverpool, that day could be on this season, and Arsenal fans are revelling in the prospect of beating their rivals to a Champions League spot.

Another fan added: “Nothing will warm my heart more hang seeing spurs host Europa games in their new shining toilet bowl next season.”

While one fan claimed: “Tottenham would bottle a participation trophy.”

"Many Photos" - How an unlikely female spy with a wooden leg helped win WWII

A female spy with a wooden leg dubbed 'the most dangerous of all' by the Gestapo, helped win World War II by getting prostitutes to infect Nazis with syphilis and gonorrhea.

Virginia Hall, worked for Winston Churchill's Special Operations Executive, a forerunner of MI6 and slipped back and forth between London and France, wreaking havoc behind enemy lines.

Hall, who had a wooden leg, was considered such a top level operative that Gestapo chief Hermann Göring put out Wanted posters offering a reward for the capture of the woman he viewed as the most dangerous spy in war-torn France.

She was based in Lyon, a key part of the French resistance, and became adept at recruiting potential allies, as revealed in a new book called A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell.

One of the adept spy's key lieutenants was Germaine Guerin, a brothel owner who ran an establishment popular with German officers and government officials.

The 37-year-old made parts of her brothel into flats available for safe houses, encouraged her girls to spike their clients drinks and got some clients addicted to heroin to make them incapable of fighting.

Germaine, then introduced Virginia to Dr Jean Rousset, a gynaecologist, who let her use the clinic to help injured agents.

In addition, Dr Rousset, would trick German soldiers into thinking a brothel girl was free from sexual diseases by giving out special white cards to those girls free of infection.

But the girls were not free from infection and would then spread possible syphilis or gonorrhea to the enemy, thereby incapacitating them.

The resourceful spy also managed to get a hairdresser to help disguise members of the resistance, used her extensive network of contacts to hide and feed British airmen who were shot down and recruited the owner of an underwear shop to sot

Miss Hall, was fluent in French, Italian and German when she went to work for the US foreign service before World War II but was invalided out of the service after a hunting accident in Turkey.

Her shotgun slipped from her grasp and as she grabbed it, it fired, blasting away her foot.

By the time she got to a hospital, gangrene had set in. To save her life, the surgeon had to amputate her left leg below the knee.

Always able to see the funny side of things, Miss Hall immediately named her wooden leg Cuthbert.

She was in Paris when war broke out in 1939 and joined the ambulance service.

When the Nazis invaded France in 1940, she fled to London, and with her language skills, was soon recruited by the SOE.

After training in the clandestine arts of killing, communications and security, she went to Vichy France to set up resistance networks under the cover of being a reporter for the New York Post.

After the November, 1942, North Africa invasion, German troops flooded into her area and things became too hot even for her.

She hiked on her artificial leg across the Pyrenees in the dead of winter to Spain.

During the journey she radioed London saying she was okay but Cuthbert was giving her trouble.

Forgetting this was her artificial leg, and knowing her value to the Allied cause, her commanders radioed back: 'If Cuthbert troublesome eliminate him.'

She later returned to London, but headed back to France in 1944 to set up a series of resistance fighters to target Nazi communications and blow up bridges.

After the war, Miss Hall married one of the men she'd fought with in France, French-born OSS agent, Paul Goilott, and continued to work for the CIA.

She later received the Distiguished Service Cross in 1945.

Woman Of No Importance by Sonia Purnell (Virago Press, £20), is released in April in hardback.

"Many Photos" - Soft Brexit is inevitable after triple deal defeat, Theresa May’s enforcer admits

A SOFTER Brexit is now inevitable, Theresa May’s Commons enforcer warned today.

Chief Whip Julian Smith claimed Parliament’s Remainer MPs would force Britain into a soft form of Brexit.

Chief Whip Julian Smith says Britain is heading for a soft Brexit
Reuters

He said the PM’s strategy was always doomed after she failed to win a majority in the 2017 snap election.

Mr Smith, who is responsible for getting votes through the Commons, also hit out at warring Cabinet ministers saying Theresa May’s top team is the rowdiest in history.

In their 2017 manifesto, the Tories pledged to quit the EU’s single market and customs union after Brexit.

But MPs could now vote to keep Britain in either or both after seizing control of the brexit process.

The Chief Whip told a BBC documentary Mrs May should have admitted she was never going to get exactly what she wants.

Mr Smith said: “The thing people forget is that the Conservative party went to get a majority in order to deliver Brexit, and failed to get a majority.

“The Government as a whole probably should have just been clearer on the consequences of that.

“The Parliamentary arithmetic would mean that this would be inevitably a kind of softer type of Brexit.”

And attacking the squabbling Cabinet, he added: “This is I think the worst example of ill-discipline in Cabinet in British political history.”

Senior ministers are at loggerheads over how to proceed with Brexit after the PM’s deal was defeated three times.

Brexiteers want to go full steam ahead with No Deal while Remainers say Britain should stay in the customs union if that’s what Parliament supports.

"Many Photos" - JAN MOIR reviews hit drama Line Of Duty as it returns to BBC1

Line Of Duty

Rating:

Mother of God. Line Of Duty (BBC1) is back for a fifth series and the show’s ten million viewers will be pleased to see that police corruption still flourishes at Polk Avenue Station like a thin blue line through a rotting Stilton.

Thank goodness, otherwise AC-12 boss Superintendent Ted Hastings (‘like the battle’) would be out of a job and nobody wants that, least of all me.

As always, this most superior police procedural was tightly plotted, skilfully produced and complete with a shocking death at the end.

Stephen Graham is the dream guest lead for this show, a truly gritty actor always adept at dissolving into his role, on whichever side of the police tape he finds himself. And here he is, starring as a nasty piece of work called John Corbett ¿ an enigma wrapped in a balaclava

Stephen Graham is the dream guest lead for this show, a truly gritty actor always adept at dissolving into his role, on whichever side of the police tape he finds himself. And here he is, starring as a nasty piece of work called John Corbett – an enigma wrapped in a balaclava

Writer and creator Jed Mercurio – the man who killed off the Keeley Hawes character in his hit series Bodyguard – has never been afraid of the swift despatching of key figures.

This is one of Line Of Duty’s many strengths, as viewers never know quite who or what is going to blow up next.

And it was certainly not that lovely PC Maneet Bindra (Maya Sondhi) would expire on a wooden jetty at the hands of an underworld heroin gang, her throat slit in gruesome jihadi fashion, her lifeblood draining away into the swirling waters below.

Another gasping moment from this darkest of dramas.

In a thrilling opening episode, AC-12 found themselves accidentally embroiled in Operation Peartree, a long-term investigation into criminality and drug dealing.

Kate (Vicky McClure), Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) and Steve (Martin Compston) are pictured abovein the show's new series. As always, this most superior police procedural was tightly plotted, skilfully produced and complete with a shocking death at the end

Straight away we were plunged into the delicious perplexity of cop shop jargon.

‘Is there a UCO embedded in the OCG that carried out the heroin hijack?’ wondered Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure). I think she means is there an Under Cover Officer working in the Organised Crime Gang who stole the heroin originally seized by police 18 months ago?

‘Correct, Superintendent Moir. Awaiting further instructions ma’am,’ she replied, but only in my dreams.

Speaking of which, Stephen Graham is the dream guest lead for this show, a truly gritty actor always adept at dissolving into his role, on whichever side of the police tape he finds himself.

And here he is, starring as a nasty piece of work called John Corbett – an enigma wrapped in a balaclava who turns out to be the UCO that Fleming was GOA (Going On About).

Is he a rogue rogue going rogue? I’m a bit confused already.

In the last series, Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) was peeved that Fleming was promoted to his rank.

By day, the action takes place in a nameless northern town amid a bland officescape of Venetian blinds and tapping keyboards. By night, there is naught but the desolation of fractured lives. Stephen Graham, playing John Corbett, is pictured above in a balaclava

Two years later, Detective Inspector Fleming is now his superior and he has compensated by growing a dapper beard and putting big boy gel on his hair.

Fleming signifies her higher rank by walking into rooms first and saying things such as ‘Steve, are you okay to open a case number?’ He calls her ‘boss’ and seems to be taking it well. So far.

Meanwhile, Operation Peartree appears to open a door into the bigger question that has fuelled the show’s dense plotlines since the first series: who is H, the corrupt cop mastermind behind, well, everything?

Series Four seemed to conclude it was Assistant Chief Constable Hilton, who then obligingly killed himself.

However, suspicions continue to bubble. Could H be Ted H, for Hastings? Now and again, orb-eyed Fleming gives him her special zombie stare while Arnott signals his puzzlement by pushing his eyebrows together like gables.

What! Surely the villain cannot be Old Testament Ted, a man whose only mission in life is to catch bent coppers?

As played by Adrian Dunbar, Super Ted is still the star of the show; the no-nonsense Ulsterman who churns through lies and venality like a craggy figurehead on the prow of an icebreaker. He’s good at the barking argument, supreme at pithy colloquialisms.

‘I didn’t float up the Lagan on a bubble,’ he said last night. When he gets really angry, his hair stays in place but his punctuation goes to pot.

‘That was. Information. That put. Three. Officers. In the MORGUE,’ he roared, when confronted by Maneet’s hapless treachery.

Threaded through are tantalising glimpses of the private lives of our three crime fighters.

Kate appears to be back with her husband and small son; she goes home to a hot dinner and a warm welcome.

After a beating put him in a wheelchair in the last series, lonely Steve is still suffering back problems. At home he is taking painkillers and online dating, the latter without much enthusiasm.

Ted is living in a single room in the dreary Edge Park Hotel, complete with a broken toilet, an unpaid bill, a trouser press and the divorce papers from the wife he still loves.

That’s the thing about Line Of Duty. There is nothing beautiful nor diverting here.

By day, the action takes place in a nameless northern town amid a bland officescape of Venetian blinds and tapping keyboards. By night, there is naught but the desolation of fractured lives.

It is not lyrical, sometimes it is not even credible.

Yet amid the MDF desks and the acrylic carpeting, we are gripped by something much bigger and more profound – the eternal battle between good and evil.

There will be a crunch Commons vote on Brexit alternatives today.

Deadlocked MPs are expected to be asked to vote on up to four different Brexit options in today’s second stage of ‘Indicative Votes’ – from a Norway-style Brexit to a second Referendum.

None of eight voted on last week won a majority – but large numbers of Tories abstained.

A Government spokesman insisted it remained “committed to delivering the Brexit deal – which does not include membership of the Customs Union”.

"Many Photos" - Two quizzed over death of boy, 7, electrocuted outside pub while ‘trying to retrieve football’

TWO people have been quizzed over the death of a seven-year-old boy who was electrocuted outside an East London pub while trying to retrieve a football.

Little Harvey Tyrrell had been playing at the King Harold Pub in Romford when he tragically suffered fatal injuries in September last year.

At the time, witnesses said he had climbed over a wall to retrieve a ball but stumbled and hit his head.

Police today confirmed two men, aged 70 and 72, were interviewed under caution over the tragedy, with a file sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Emergency services had rushed to the King Harold pub in Station Road in Romford just after 5.20pm on September 11 last year.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Officers and LAS attended and a seven-year-old boy, Harvey Tyrrell from Harold Wood, was found unresponsive.

“He was taken to an east London hospital where he was pronounced dead at 18.33hrs.”

A post mortem was conducted that week, with authorities today confirming his cause of death was electrocution.

The spokesperson said the two men had been interviewed on September 12 last year and January 11 this year.

They added: “A file on the incident has now been sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.”

Tributes had been paid to the schoolboy in the days after the tragedy, with local saying: “Harvey was a beautiful, happy & healthy seven-year-old boy who loved his football just like any other boy his age.

“Unfortunately, on the 11th September Harvey had a tragic accident & sadly passed away, leaving his mum, dad and family completely heartbroken. The paramedics tried to help resuscitate Harvey for over an hour but he had already been taken by the angels.”

More than £25,000 had been raised for the youngster’s funeral.

"Many Photos" - Fishermen are rescued after the weight of sharks caused their boat to sink

Two fishermen were rescued after the weight of two sharks they caught caused their boat to sink.

The pair hauled in two huge sharks while surfing 60 kilometres offshore from Newcastle, on the New South Wales coast.

The weight of the two sharks caused the boat to sink as the men clinched onto the tip of the boat before a rescue helicopter arrived.

The fishermen managed to activate an emergency GPS beacon before the boat sunk and fired a flare into the sky.

Winch operator of the Westpac Rescue helicopter Matt Dippolito, told Nine News both men were wearing life jackets and were grateful to be rescued.

'Only the front of the boat was sticking out of the water and the rest had sunk and they were holding onto the side,' he said.

'They were extremely grateful to be winched aboard, and in good spirits too.'

Dramatic helicopter footage showed the men being pulled to safety with the outline of one of the sharks clearly seen from above.
