"Many Photos" - Man Utd and Liverpool target De Ligt has already ‘agreed’ a deal to leave Ajax this summer

MANCHESTER UNITED and Liverpool have lost the race for Ajax whizkid Matthijs de Ligt’s signature, according to reports.

The Dutchman has reportedly agreed a deal with Barcelona and will follow his team-mate Frenkie de Jong to the Nou Camp this summer.

Both Prem sides were facing a fierce competition for De Ligt, 19, who has been one of the most sought-after talents in Europe.

The young centre-back has recently said that he could see himself move to Juventus, although revealed many other clubs have already spoken to his agent Mino Raiola over a potential deal.

But Dutch news outlet De Telegraaf claims De Ligt’s future is now “clear” and he is headed to Barcelona.

Their head of sports Valentijn Driessen said: “It’s clear that De Ligt will leave Ajax for Barca.

“Ajax left it clear to Barcelona that they don’t have to pay extra for Matthijs, unlike for other clubs.”

Barcelona indeed seemed to have an advantage over other European clubs due to their blossoming relationship with Ajax.

The Catalans have already signed midfield maestro Frenkie de Jong, 21, from the Amsterdam outfit in a £65m deal.

De Jong even revealed his new club asked him to make sure Ajax dump Barca’s bitter rivals Real Madrid out of the Champions League last month.

And so they did, stunning the Spanish giants with a 4-1 victory at the Bernabeu.

Also, the La Liga champs have reportedly offered the Dutch side an option to loan a number of their academy talents to sweeten the deal for De Ligt

Juan Miranda, Oriol Busquets, Riqui Puing and Jean Clair Todibo were among the names discussed by the two clubs.

But De Ligt’s potential arrival opens the doors for Barca defender Samuel Umtiti, 25, to leave the club.

United have reportedly been interested in the French centre-back, who could be available for £51.5m.

However, former Red Devils player Mikael Silvestre warned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, that Umtiti lacks “the X-Factor” to succeed at Old Trafford.

"Many Photos" - Doctor whose daughter nearly died from an undiagnosed heart defect develops heart scans for babies

A doctor whose newborn daughter nearly died from an undiagnosed heart defect is developing technology which could revolutionise ultrasound scans and help hundreds of babies a year.

Professor Reza Razavi was inspired to lead his research team to produce unprecedented 3D images of unborn babies’ hearts following the birth of his daughter Poppy.

Routine scans had failed to pick up that she had a major defect which meant she had to have a series of life-saving operations and treatments in the first month of her life.

Professor Reza Razavi was inspired to produce unprecedented 3D images of unborn babies' hearts following the birth of his daughter, Poppy, who nearly died from an undiagnosed heart defect

The 3D image of her heart was created using loads of different pictures of the organ

The 3D scan allowed a problem with unborn Violet-Vienna's aorta to be identified

Doctors tested the new scanning method on the unborn Violet-Vienna and found she had a narrowing of the main artery from the heart – the aorta – as well as two holes in the vital organ.

Despite suffering a cardiac arrest and being kept alive by a machine, Poppy, now 14, made a good recovery.

Now, her father, who is a consultant paediatric cardiologist, hopes the 3D model software will allow specialists to diagnose accurately hundreds of babies with congenital heart disease every year during standard pregnancy scans. It will mean doctors can fully prepare for the emergency care the newborns will need and reduce the chance of complications – while the babies are still in the womb.

Expectant mothers undergo a scan at 20 weeks to check the baby is growing properly and to look for any congenital abnormalities. But current ultrasounds only pick up between 20 and 50 per cent of major heart abnormalities that will require surgery after birth.

This is because the size of the foetal heart, quick heartbeat and baby moving make some defects difficult to detect.

Professor Razavi said: ‘My experiences with Poppy strongly motivated me to think “look, we need to take away the postcode lottery that some babies get picked up and some don’t”. It’s nobody’s fault, it’s just hard to do and we have 600,000 babies being scanned every year so the question was: can we develop technology to improve it?’

Violet-Vienna Pettitt's heart defect was discovered by a team from King's College London. They were able to prepare necessary treatment using scans of the foetus while she was in the womb and operate shortly after birth

The professor’s team, from King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, has developed methods that use 2D pictures taken from different angles to build 3D computer models of the heart and blood vessels.

Trials using MRI scans and the sophisticated computer software on 200 pregnant women have been found to be far more effective at showing up abnormalities. Researchers hope this could be used as part of the standard anomaly scan in future. Professor Razavi added: ‘Suddenly we were able to clearly see in each of these patients, what the problem was. This helps the parents because as doctors we were able to explain exactly what was going on – there’s no uncertainty.

‘We can say for sure that they [the babies] were going to have an operation or that it was going to be OK. It also meant that after birth, we were able to plan the treatment straight away without having to do more tests – and basically improve the outcome for patients.

‘This way it ensures the children are in the best possible form for the operation.’

The technology, which uses artificial intelligence, is now in use at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, where specialists can send patients when heart problems have been picked up on ultrasounds.

Kirbi-Lea Pettitt, 30, from Erith, south-east London, was referred there after her 20-week scan suggested her baby could have serious heart defects.

Doctors tested the new scanning method on the unborn Violet-Vienna and found she had a narrowing of the main artery from the heart – the aorta – as well as two holes in the vital organ.

Professor Razavi said her early diagnosis meant she received the best care, adding: ‘We planned ahead and operated on her a few days later.’ Mrs Pettitt said Violet-Vienna, who turns one on April 15, is now thriving thanks to the ‘amazing treatment’. She added: ‘We owe the doctors a lot.’

Researchers expect the scans to be introduced nationally within the next year, potentially helping 750 babies annually.

"Many Photos" - Today’s free horse racing tips: Chelmsford, Ludlow and Newcastle – Steve Mullen’s betting preview for Monday, April 1

LUDLOW MONDAY

2.15

RAPPER was an impressive winner the last time he tackled this course and distance in January. He can be forgiven a modest effort at Fakenham last time because he never went a yard and something was clearly not right on the day.

Steve Mullen guides you through Monday's racing at Chelmsford, Ludlow and Newcastle
Steve Mullen guides you through Monday’s racing at Chelmsford, Ludlow and Newcastle

He’s had a little break since then and can bounce back here.

Dr Sanderson looks progressive and battled well to win at Ffos Las last time out. He steps up in distance here which should bring improvement.

Smackwater Jack should find this a lot easier than the red-hot novice handicap final at Sandown last time. He is another who won on his last run over course and distance.

2.50

HENLLAN HARRI needed the run at Sandown last time coming back from a long break. His form was rock solid before that with a win on his chasing debut before a good second at Uttoxeter. He is 2lb higher than that and should run well.

This small field may help Marchilac get back to form after two poor runs since coming back from a break. He went well on his last visit here, which should help.

Cresswell Legend makes more appeal than Fox Appeal and his recent breathing operation should help.

3.20

Richard Johnson got a good tune out of SNAPDRAGON FIRE when winning over course and distance last time and they should go well again.

He is on a fair mark stepping back into handicap company and he could have more to offer.

Potters Midnight won well at Lingfield two starts ago and has held her form well, including when a close-up fourth at Fakenham last time. She is handicapped to go close again.

Court Royale wasn’t beaten far at Taunton latest and has gone well here before.

3.55

TIMOTEO has already left his hurdles form behind with two convincing wins as a chaser. He had 13 lengths in hand at Stratford on debut and stepped up on that when scoring at Kempton last time.

This trip is ideal and there should be more to come despite a 10lb rise in the weights.

Valseur Du Granval was beaten less than a length here last time and should hit the frame again although he rarely gets his head in front.

Railroad Junkie needs to bounce back from a poor run at Huntingdon after a couple of good efforts at Taunton.

4.25

SILK RUN continues in good form and was a solid third at Warwick off this mark last time. She had earlier won back-to-back races at Bangor including over a similar distance to this.

Her best form would see her go very close.

Mabela had a bit left in the tank when winning at Huntingdon last time out given she came from a long way off the pace. A 5lb rise gives her a chance of following up.

Midnight Target didn’t fire over fences last time but was earlier a good second in a hurdle here and looks on a fair enough mark.

Delegate
“Delegate (above) can get the better of three rivals in a modest race…”

5.00

DELEGATE can get the better of three rivals in a modest race even for hunter chase level. He was last seen in an Aintree Grade 1 albeit half a furlong behind the others. He won a fair novice chase around Musselburgh before that so has some ability.

Hidden Charmer was second in the pointing field last time and can chase him home.

5.30

DIEU BENISSE is worth another chance despite falling on both his hurdles start so far. She was arguably going better than anything when taking a late tumble here last time and there isn’t a lot to beat here.

Absolute Jaffa improved on her debut effort when less than three lengths off the pace at Market Rasen last time and should take another step forward.

Darling Du Large was collared on the run-in at Newcastle latest and should get home easier on this better ground.

"Many Photos" - Is he joking? Tom Watson says a second referendum on Brexit will UNITE the country

Tom Watson yesterday declared that a second referendum was the only way to unite the country.

The deputy leader of Labour said it would be inconceivable to not promise another vote in the next election manifesto.

And he said his party had experienced a boost in the polls thanks to its support for the idea.

'We need to move beyond Brexit but it seems to me the only way we can do that is to have a people's vote,' he told the BBC.

Asked on the Andrew Marr Show whether he was in favour of a second referendum under all circumstances, he replied: 'That's the only way we can bring the country back together now.'

Mr Watson admitted that he was not responsible for writing Labour's manifesto and was just 'one bloke around a table'.

But he added: 'It seems to me to be inconceivable that if there was a general election tomorrow – and we hope there will be, we have been calling for one for months – that a people's vote won't be in the manifesto.'

Shadow Foreign Secretary Emily Thornberry yesterday said that 'in her heart' she still wanted to stay in the EU.

She told Sky News: 'We are likely to leave the EU but it is something we need to agree ourselves and I think that there is a strong argument for asking the people to have a final say on this.

'I think that it is quite difficult for us to leave the European Union, most of us campaigned for Remain.

'I think in our hearts we want to remain, but the difficulty is that we have to square that with democracy. We are democrats above everything else.'

Miss Thornberry said Theresa May was out of control following the third rejection of her Brexit plan by the Commons.

She added: 'Even with just days to go she is just saying 'It is my deal or no deal'. That is not meaningful, that is not democracy.

'That is Theresa May stamping her feet and saying 'I want this, no one else is allowed to do anything'. No wonder she is in trouble. She is out of control.

'She is not listening to anyone. No one knows what she is going to do next. I think her judgment has been undermined.'

The comments came as a poll found Labour has taken a five-point lead over the Conservatives.

The Deltapoll survey for the Mail on Sunday forecast that Mr Corbyn would win 307 seats in a general election – 13 short of a working majority – while the Tories would claim 264.

A Labour Party spokesman said: 'We will continue to seek a majority in Parliament for a close economic relationship with the EU to break the deadlock or a public vote to avoid a damaging Tory Brexit or a No Deal outcome.

'Our manifesto will be decided through our party's democratic policy-making processes in the usual way.'

"Many Photos" - We need a new way to treat the sickness of knife violence, write THERESA MAY and SAJID JAVID

Theresa May at Church on Sunday near her Maidenhead constituency

Theresa May at Church on Sunday near her Maidenhead constituency

The loss of a life to knife crime is horrific. It is senseless, destructive and a tragedy for the families, friends and communities of the victims.

It is a terrible truth that, disproportionately, it is young people whose lives are being lost in this way.

This cannot be allowed to continue. We must and will use every tool and tactic at our disposal to deter young people from carrying knives.

We must treat the threat which knives pose to our society like a disease.

So this week we are bringing together experts from many different disciplines for a serious youth violence summit at 10 Downing Street.

The aim is to get people from right across society – not just politicians and police officers, but figures from education, healthcare and social work, religious and community leaders, youth workers and more – working side by side to spot young people at risk, flag their concerns, and make targeted interventions to steer them away from crime.

Rather than having a complex web of different agencies and organisations working independently on different parts of the problem, we want to see everyone working together in what has been called a public health approach.

Because youth violence is an issue that affects us all, and the only way to beat it is for us all to work together.

Not just dealing with the tragic aftermath when someone has been stabbed, but intervening long before.

Responding to the early signs of worrying behaviour or problems at home, or stopping teenagers being groomed by ruthless gangs, so that a young person doesn’t pick up a knife in the first place.

We are today launching a consultation into a legal duty that will underpin the multi-agency, public health approach, an approach that builds on work we are already doing to stop crime before it happens. For example, we’re putting an extra £100million into law enforcement in the worst-affected areas, getting more police on the frontline and setting up Violence Reduction Units. And our new £200million Youth Endowment Fund will provide long-term investment for programmes that steer young people away from becoming involved in violent crime or reoffending.

This approach is not making excuses for criminals. Responsibility for knife crime lies with the perpetrators, and anyone even considering arming themselves with a blade should be under no illusions: if you carry a knife you will be caught, and you will be punished.

The police are already catching and prosecuting more people who carry a knife – and the courts are sending more of those convicted to prison for longer.

Yesterday, we announced that we will be piloting changes to stop and search, which will initially apply in areas particularly affected by violent crime: London, the West Midlands, Merseyside, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Wales and Greater Manchester.

Our new Offensive Weapons Bill will make it harder for criminals to arm themselves. And almost £1billion of extra police funding is being made available this year, so that local forces have the resources they need.

But while strong, effective law enforcement has an obvious and vital role to play, we cannot try to simply arrest our way out of this situation, dealing with people only after they have broken the law.

After all, were it an infectious disease killing our children, Mail readers would not expect the authorities to just focus on treating the symptoms – you would rightly demand that we also do everything possible to prevent people getting ill at all. The families of those who have lost loved ones – many of whom will be at the summit today – deserve no less.

Of course, nothing we say or do this week will bring back the children who were so cruelly taken from them.

But we can promise that we will do whatever it takes to confront and defeat the scourge of youth violence.

And that we will do everything in our power to stop more families suffering as they have suffered.

"Many Photos" - Sparkling wine sales in the UK have dropped for the first time in five years as nation passed ‘peak prosecco’

SPARKLING wine sales in the UK have dropped for the first time in five years, stats show.

Money experts believe the nation has passed “peak prosecco” — with younger people ditching the “must-buy” drink for trendier tipples.

The current economic climate has also been blamed for three million fewer sparkling wine bottles sold last year.

There were 214 million bought in 2018 — down from 217 million the year before, according to accountancy group UHY Hacker Young.

Martin Jones, a partner at the group, said: “After years of growing popularity for sparkling wine, we have finally passed peak prosecco.

“Prosecco very quickly went from chilled bottles in expensive bars to T-shirts across the country.

“For a drink that trades on its luxury, being available everywhere can damage its image.

“Can anyone blame drinkers in the UK for not cracking open the sparkling wine at the same rate?

“I’m not sure 2018 will be looked back on as a vintage year for celebrations by very many people.”

The growing popularity of artisan gin and rum cocktails has also turned younger drinkers away from fizz.

Mr Jones added: “Just as quickly as prosecco became the must-buy drink for young people, pink gin and rum could replace it.”

"Many Photos" - Theresa May warned she’ll ‘destroy’ Tory party if she backs soft Brexit – as she plans FOURTH vote on her deal this week

THERESA May will “destroy” the Tory party if she backs a soft Brexit, her colleagues have warned — as she prepares to hold a fourth vote on her Brexit deal this week.

The PM wants to bring the deal back to the Commons as soon as Tuesday — forcing MPs to choose between it and a much softer Brexit which keeps Britain tied to Brussels for good.

Yesterday, the Justice Secretary claimed that if she loses yet again, she will embrace a soft Brexit rather than risk Britain leaving the EU without a deal in 12 days’ time.

But if MPs try to force the Prime Minister into moving towards a customs union in the second round of “indicative votes” tonight, Mrs May could face a Cabinet revolt within 24 hours.

One Cabinet minister even said last night: “The Conservative Party cannot accept a customs union, and at least half the Cabinet won’t accept it. It would destroy the party and it would lead to an election anyway, which we would then lose.”

Senior ministers are bitterly divided over the way forward — with Mrs May facing a raft of resignations of either Leavers or Remainers depending on the path she chooses.

Brexiteers led by Andrea Leadsom are furious at the prospect of Britain staying in the customs union.

But pro-EU ministers such as Amber Rudd could quit if the PM goes for No Deal instead.

MPs are likely to back a customs union tonight — which would stop Britain cutting trade deals around the world.

No10 sources say that Mrs May could then pit the customs union against her deal in a FOURTH “meaningful vote” on Tuesday.

CABINET CLASH

The PM hopes hardline Leavers will finally accept her withdrawal agreement for fear of seeing a much softer Brexit.

If Mrs May again fails to get her deal through, April 12 becomes the new Brexit deadline.

The UK will automatically leave the EU with No Deal on that date — unless the Government agrees a long extension to Brexit, likely to last up to a year.

Boris Johnson, one of the front-runners to succeed Mrs May, wrote in the Daily Telegraph yesterday: “We should really come out with no deal — now looking by far the best option.”

But pro-EU Justice Secretary David Gauke insisted the PM wouldn’t accept No Deal, telling the BBC: “Parliament is not going to allow us to go down that route and that is not the course of action she is going to take.”

Warning that Britain is in a “national crisis”, he added: “We’re clearly going to have to consider very carefully the will of Parliament.

“I would rather leave the customs union… but we also have to reflect that my party does not have the votes to get its manifesto commitments through the House of Commons.

“Sometimes you do have to accept your second or third choice in order to avoid an outcome that you consider even worse.”

Mrs May is under pressure from Eurosceptic ministers to push for No Deal if her withdrawal agreement is killed off for good.

Mrs Leadsom has summoned her “pizza club” of senior Brexiteers to agree a common approach.

Nearly a dozen Cabinet ministers signed a letter to Mrs May warning her not to accept a softer Brexit.

And leading backbenchers said the Conservative party would split for ever if the PM accepted a customs union.

Steve Baker threatened to resign from the Tories, blasting: “I will revisit once more the question of whether I can retain the whip before I submit to a life of regret and shame after failing in a struggle for the rights of a free people in which others have literally fought and died.”

But in a sign the Government’s Remainers are ready to fight back, dozens of centrist MPs have formed a new One Nation Group.

The gathering of pro-EU Tories is understood to be backed by Ms Rudd, David Gauke, Greg Clark and Nicky Morgan.
