"Many Photos" - Southend turn to Harry Redknapp’s old assistant Kevin Bond to lead League One survival bid

KEVIN BOND has been given the Southend job until the end of the season.

The struggling Shrimpers have been without a boss since sacking Chris Powell last week after a run of 11 games without a win.

And the Essex side have turned to experienced coach Bond for the remainder of the campaign.

Bond, 61, has worked many times with Harry Redknapp throughout his career, including at Portsmouth and Tottenham.

His most recent job came as a consultant for Hong Kong Pegasus.

Southend are one place above the League One drop zone on goal difference with six games to go.

Following Powell’s sacking, the club released a statement, saying: “The results over a number of weeks, 11 games without a win, has impacted all concerned and immediate changes needed to be made.

“The club’s interests are paramount, but the board are nevertheless disappointed to see Chris leave.”

Academy coach Ricky Duncan took over on a caretaker basis ahead of Bond’s appointment.

Powell, 49, had been in charge at Roots Hall since January 2018, having  spent six years at Southend as a player at Southend between 1990 and 1996.

He returned last winter as boss to take over from Phil Brown.

But his last win with the side came almost two months ago – a 4-0 success at Bradford on January 19.

Powell had guided the Shrimpers to a tenth-placed finish last season and was in the same spot before the 11-game winless run which signalled his exit.

The club now look in danger of the drop after four seasons in League One.

Bond’s first game in charge will be away to Joey Barton’s Fleetwood this Saturday.
