"Many Photos" - Driverless cars are being trialled on roads in South London all week ahead of plans for car-share service

DRIVERLESS cars are being tested on UK roads, it was revealed yesterday.

Artificial intelligence firm FiveAI is trialling five cars day and night on all days of the week.

Safety drivers are in each autonomous vehicle to take control if needed.

The firm has been collecting road data in the cars since last year and aims to start passenger trials for a driverless car-share service next year.

FiveAI boss Stan Boland said: “Safety is crucial.” He added the firm is working closely with authorities in the test areas of Croydon and Bromley, South London.

The company has previously said it hopes to eventually create an autonomous car service that could help reduce congestion, emissions, incidents and the cost and time of journeys in London.

Future of mobility minister Jesse Norman said the Government was keen on seeing self-driving cars on UK roads.

He said: “The long term potential for self-driving vehicles is huge – to improve road safety, tackle loneliness and isolation and create economic opportunity.

“So I welcome the safe testing of this new technology. But increasingly self-driving cars are just one of many innovations we are likely to see on our roads.”
