"Many Photos" - Schoolboy, 14, battered with a hammer by thugs who ‘stole £1 and his mobile phone’

A TEENAGE boy was left bloodied by thugs in broad daylight – for the sake of just £1 and his phone.

Jayden O’Rourke, 14, sustained a huge gash on his head, a bruise on his eye, and blood all over his face and had to be taken to hospital for stitches.

He was walking through Alexandra Park in Oldham, Greater Manchester, at just 11.30am on Saturday when he was set upon by the yobs.

The gang, who claimed to be armed with a hammer, jumped the schoolboy as he made his way to his grandmother’s house.

In a Facebook post that has had over 3,200 likes, Jayden’s dad Mark O’Rourke said he’d received a call saying the teenager had been attacked with a “hammer and a bar”.

He said he’d been told two men were behind the incident.

Mr O’Rourke wrote: “Getting a phone call at half 11 in morning from the police…saying your son’s been involved in an incident.

“Then finding out my 14yro been attacked by to grown men with a hammer and a bar.

They told him they had a hammer and with the injuries he has sustained it could have been

“All for a phone.”

His mother, Leanne Lord, told Manchester Evening News: “We don’t actually know what he was attacked with – but they told him they had a hammer and with the injuries he has sustained it could have been a hammer.”

She added: “He is alright now, he is getting there.

“We have no idea who did it to him but the police are looking into it.”

Ms Lord pleaded for anyone with information to come froward: “It’s gone so viral somebody must have seen it and know who did it to him.”

Tom O’Rouke, Jayden’s grandfather, said: “I have just seen him. He looked a mess, a big bruise on his eye and his face bashed in.”

Since the attack, the community in Oldham has come together to help Jayden.

Kind donors, moved by social media posts from his father and auntie, gave money towards a new phone and offered free Muay Thai boxing lessons to help build his confidence.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
