Marvel Studios
With Endgame looming on the horizon, it’s time to start thinking about who’s gonna harass the Avengers next (whatever their new line-up will be). While we don’t know which of our Phase 1-3 heroes will be back, we do know that a lot of their villains are still kicking around somewhere, with their best potential stories unfulfilled.
I’d like to see some of these baddies return and get some love and villainy on the big screen.
Marvel Studios
The Abomination
The Incredible Hulk
Emil Blonsky’s semi-deranged soldier was the highlight of the movie. According to the World Security Council, he was considered a hero and they wanted Nick Fury to add him to the Avengers Initiative, once they stabilized his mental state. Fury found a way to kibosh that.
Last we heard, he was held in cryogenic suspension in Alaska, but given that it was S.H.I.E.L.D that was holding him, odds are when the agency fell courtesy of Hydra, he may have been released.
I wanna see Mark Ruffalo’s banner go up against this guy.
Marvel Studios
The Leader
The Incredible Hulk
It’s a shame that the rights to the Hulk solo films are so messy, because The Leader could be an amazing villain for the Avengers. Samuel Sterns and his gamma-powered brain could really fuck things up, considering he could be smarter than Tony Stark, Shuri, Dr. Strange and even Reed Richards (because we know the MCU is gonna reboot the Fantastic Four).
According to Kevin Feige, they just haven’t found the right place for him that feels organic and natural. Let’s hope there’s a spot for him in Phase 4 and onwards. As for now, he’s imprisoned by S.H.I.E.L.D, which doesn’t really mean much anymore.
Marvel Studios
Batroc the Leaper
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
He was more of a convenient bad guy/misdirection than an outright villain, but I liked his inclusion. He’s a classic Captain America villain, and in the film, he was hired by Fury to highjack the Lemurian Star, so that he could find out about Hydra’s secret satellite launches.
I’d be cool to see him return down the line and fight the inevitable Bucky Barnes version of Cap. And maybe, he could do a little more leaping this time. Oh, and I want that moustache.
Marvel Studios
Dormammu
Doctor Strange
I simply want Dormammu to come back, because he was poorly used in the first film. He’s the “Dread Dormammu,” the biggest badass of the dark dimension, and he was defeated through time loops and a promise to never come back.
He’s probably gonna break that promise, and according to the rumours, his niece Clea might be in Doctor Strange 2, which means he might find his way back, and really threaten the Sorcerer Supreme.
Marvel Studios
The Grandmaster
Thor: Ragnarok
While I really enjoyed the lightheartedness of this film and the characterization of Thor, this guy stole the show. I’d like to see him return and work with his brother, The Collector, in some sort of scheme. With The Eternals film on the horizon, there’s a good chance we’ll see some immortal cosmic brother shenanigans.
Marvel Studios
Helmut Zemo
Captain America: Civil War
Zemo in the MCU is a huge departure from the original comic version, but it works for the story – someone who lost family due to the Avengers and didn’t seek to destroy them, but vilify and separate them. Essentially taking their family from them.
But, I also want to see a little bit of a purple-masked tyrant who wants to take over the world. I’d love to see him as a part of a future Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers film. Given that Ghost was introduced in Ant-Man & The Wasp, makes this likely.
Marvel Studios
Justin Hammer
Iron Man 2
Introduced in the second film, he’s the former CEO of Hammer Industries and sworn enemy/rival of Tony Stark. We know that he’s still alive, as he was seen in Seagate Prison in the One Shot All Hail the King.
His company also still exists, as Hammer Industries was responsible for the Judas Bullet seen in Luke Cage. There’s a lot he can still do, and Sam Rockwell is a delight to watch on screen.
Marvel Studios
Karl Mordo
Doctor Strange
I’d hesitate to call him an outright villain, as he’s not entirely wrong with his beliefs. Magic should be respected, and not everyone treats it with enough reverence. He’s guaranteed to be the main antagonist in Doctor Strange 2, but let’s hope that he gets some serious power-ups.
Marvel Studios
The Mandarin and the Ten Rings
Iron Man 3
This is the biggest and most glaring omission to the MCU; the Mandarin. Some liked the twist in Iron Man 3, while others hated. I liked the subversion, but I’m also a purist – I want a real Mandarin and I want to know who the Ten Rings are.
According to All Hail the King, there is a real Mandarin and he wants to punish Trevor Slattery for his impersonation. We also know that the Ten Rings are still active, as we saw a guy with the tattoo in Ant-Man, working to get the Yellowjacket armour. So why are we being teased with this?
Give us a resolution and let’s see Tony fight his greatest enemy and close out the arc that started in the first film.
Marvel Studios
The Red Skull
Captain America: The First Avenger
Speaking of closing out the arcs, I want to see Cap and Skull go at it one more time. We don’t know if he’ll be in Endgame, but he should be. He was Cap’s greatest foe, and he also has intimate knowledge of the Infinity Stones and of Asgardian lore. He’s probably the greatest threat that the Avengers could face.
But given that anything and everything to do with the stones will be wrapped up in the next Avengers film, it’s now or never to see the Skull do his thing.
Marvel Studios
Mac Gargan
Spider-Man: Homecoming
He was introduced as a crime boss in this film, and comic fans know that he’s destined to become the Scorpion. But with the Elementals and Mysterio as the announced villains for Far From Home, we don’t know if he’ll be back, or if he was an Easter Egg.
I’d like to see what the MCU version of Scorpion could look like.
Marvel Studios
The Shocker
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Set photos from the filming of this movie showed a comics accurate costume, with the yellow and red mask. Then, when the film debuted, all we saw was Shultz and the gauntlets. I want to see a proper Sinister Six film with him teaming up with an escaped Scorpion and Vulture to really give Spidey a challenge.
Marvel Studios
Thanos
The Avengers
We’ve spent so much time with this guy behind the scenes, I can’t imagine a MCU without him. But at the moment, we don’t know if he’s gonna survive the events of Endgame, or if he’s gonna team up with the Avengers for some greater threat. Frankly, I found him sympathetic and getting blasted to death doesn’t seem like a fitting end.
Marvel Studios
The Tinkerer
Spider-Man: Homecoming
He’s perhaps one of the more dangerous foes introduced in the back half of the MCU films. He can take alien tech and weaponize it for mass use. That’s scary. Odds are, he’s being set up as the guy who’s gonna outfit the Scorpion and maybe even a more badass Vulture. He’s probably also the guy behind Mysterio.
Marvel Studios
Ultron
Avengers: Age of Ultron
I really feel like Marvel could have done more with a genocidal AI, and by the end of Age of Ultron, Tony claims that all remnants of the robot were destroyed. Except, they weren’t. There were still pieces found by Tooms’ crew in Homecoming.
I’m hoping somewhere down the line, he’ll return and try to take on a Tony Stark-less team. And maybe he’ll have a better plan.
Marvel Studios
Sonny Burch and his Employer
Ant-Man & The Wasp
I want to know who he was working for. Apparently, there’s someone out there that has billions to buy Pym’s lab and tech, and will be incredibly murderous if he fails. Burch and his crew are currently in jail, but that’s not to say that he won’t return somewhere down the line.
My money is on Norman Osborn as the secret billionaire.
Marvel Studios
The Winter Soldier
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
I don’t want to see Bucky, I know he’s fine. I want to see the Winter Soldier return, especially in The Black Widow. In the comics, he’s a huge part of her backstory, and we need to see this lethal assassin take him on. I want more badass Bucky action, and less of this soft and friendly guy. He’s boring.
Marvel Studios
Ghost
Ant-Man & The Wasp
She was less of a villain, and more of an unfortunate protagonist, but I want more. She had this whole history of being a secret S.H.I.E.L.D agent/assassin, and she’s got these amazing phasing powers. With the decimation happening, we don’t know if she lived or died, but we know she didn’t get the quantum healing energy she was promised.
Hope we’ll see more of her and Bill Foster in some capacity, like the aforementioned Dark Avengers or Thunderbolts.
So, who do I have to talk to, to make this happen?
