Now that we’re past January (the most notorious month in the film business for companies to dump films) and that March is almost upon us (the new month where Hollywood has started debuting some of its biggest films), let’s round up the rest of the biggest horror releases of 2019.
These will be listed by release date, but it’s worth mentioning that several of these have no release date at all. And apologies to the horror films of February, but hey, can’t win them all.
Climax (March 1)
A film where dancers have a big party where the punch bowl is spiked with LSD doesn’t really sound like a horror movie, but considering it’s directed by the infamous Gaspar Noé, the man who created one of the most brutal deaths I’ve ever seen in a movie ever (fuck you Irreversible, that fire extinguisher scene is too fucked up), I’d assume this goes to a dark place.
The Hole in The Ground (March 1)
This Irish horror film received strong reviews out of the Sundance Film Festival this year, a classic horror story about a mother and her increasingly sinister son. I’m not going to lie, this one sounds a little generic to me, but the buzz around it means I’ll give it a chance.
Us (March 22)
Arguably one of the biggest horror movie releases of the year, Jordan Peele’s next horror film looks fucking killer, straight up. I’m psyched for this one, and beyond envious of anyone who gets into the film’s premiere at SXSW this year before the rest of the world sees it.
Pet Sematary (April 5)
It’s a Stephen King remake. It looks scary as fuck. Don’t really need to say a whole lot else about this one.
The Curse of La Llorona (April 19)
Well well well, looks like they’re finally making a movie out of Latin America’s most infamous folk tale. Interesting note about this film: Even though it’s not out yet, its director, Michael Chaves, has already been hired to direct The Conjuring 3, and he was explicitly hired because of James Wan being impressed by this movie. So, this one might really be something to look out for.
Ma (May 31)
Goddamn this one came out of nowhere! Apparently Octavia Spencer got back together with the director The Help to make a fucking horror film, and it looks pretty great! It’s a wild setup for a horror film and Spencer already seems like she’s having the time of her life in this, so count me in.
Child’s Play (June 21)
The teaser for this didn’t show much, and I’m honestly a bit skeptical of a modern version of this story that appears to be stripping out the weird parts of the Child’s Play movies. But hopefully we’ll see more soon, but right now, this one could go either way.
Annabelle 3 (July 3)
The Annabelle movies are fucking bizarre to me, because the first one is a pretty universally shit upon movie, but the second Annabelle movie (that’s technically a prequel or whatever) was kind of good? Which is a way of saying that another one of these could be… Maybe good?
If it wasn’t for some other movie on this list, I’d say this is the one I was the most skeptical about, but there’s something else on here that takes that dubious honor.
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark (August)
If you really want a deep dive on why you should be excited for this one, just click here for an entire post on this potentially kickass horror movie.
Midsommar (August 9)
The director of Hereditary (and one of the most fucked up short films ever, The Strange Thing About the Johnsons) has a movie out this year and apparently they built an entire small pagan village in Sweden to film the movie, and that’s all we really know about it. So yeah, I’m fucking down to see what the hell this turns into.
It: Chapter 2 (September 6)
No explanation is necessary for why people should be hyped as fuck for this follow-up. I’m bummed that there isn’t any teaser footage yet, but I can’t wait to see how batshit this movie really is (because the back half of It as a story is where it gets fucking weird as hell).
Jacob’s Ladder (Unknown)
Hoo boy. So, this is the movie I’m the most skeptical of that will supposedly be coming out this year. A remake of the 1990 cult horror classic, this remake has been floating around for a long time. This was filmed back in 2016, and was supposed to come out this month, but has been pushed to an unknown 2019 date. And there’s no footage of it out there (that GIF is from the original). I wouldn’t get too excited about this.
The Lodge (Unknown)
Similar to The Hole in the Ground, The Lodge played the Sundance Film Festival to damn good reviews, and it’s from the creators of the German horror film Goodnight Mommy (which, I will admit, is not a particular favorite of mine, but people seem to like it a lot, so your mileage may vary). It’s setup involving a mom trapped in a lodge with her children sounds like a good starting point though.
The Lighthouse (Unknown)
It’s the next film from the director of The Witch. That’s more than enough to get me on board, and apparently it’s based on horror tales of the sea, shot entirely in black and white, and starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson (I know some people might be bummed out about Pattinson being in this, but if you’ve never seen Good Time, go do that, because it turns out Pattinson might be one of the best actors of his generation, and I’m not kidding).
The Dead Don’t Die (Unknown)
It’s a zombie movie. Normally, that would bum me out, except it’s from artsy director Jim Jarmusch of all people, so it’ll at least be interesting. More important is the cast, that includes Adam Driver, Bill fucking Murray, Selena Gomez, Chloë Sevigny, and Steve Buscemi. I wouldn’t be shocked if this movie completely misses 2019 though, mostly based on the fact that there’s almost nothing known about it.
