MAX VERSTAPPEN is the man Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel fear most in Formula One, says Red Bull team principle Christian Horner.

Hamilton dominated last year to win his fifth world title but Horner believes Verstappen has what it takes to knock the Brit off top spot.

Red Bull’s wonderkid, 21, will be out to compete for his first world title next season.

Horner said: “I don’t think he fears anything of them.

“We’ve seen those guys make mistakes throughout their careers, Sebastian had a messy year, last year.

“Max, if you look at his performance from the second half of the year, he was the second highest points scorer to Lewis.

“I don’t think he lacks anything that they have, if we can provide him with the tools to do the job.

“And I think he’s probably the driver they fear most.”

Last year the Dutch youngster had a tough start to the campaign but managed to have a strong second half of the season, achieving four podiums.

Horner believes last year’s misfortunes and frustrations have helped Verstappen grow into a stronger driver ahead of next season.

He said: “I think Max has evolved so much, entering his fourth full season of formula one.

“Looking at his evolution through last year, and like any racing driver, inevitably when things go wrong there’s frustration.”

“I think his maturity has increased, we saw that during the course of last year.

“I think he is much more rounded with experience.

“Individually he’s got all the tools and skill to take the fight to Lewis, Sebastian or whoever may be the challenge this year.”

Red Bull will test their new car later this month in Barcelona ahead of the opener in Australia in March.
