However it won’t deter Arsenal from returning with an offer when the market reopens and they are confident in landing the 21-year-old, according to BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein.

He added that the hierarchy are hugely impressed with him and will provide the cash necessary to ensure he becomes an Arsenal player.

Nkunku has struggled to cement a role in the first-team this season having started just five league matches.

And the idea of bringing Rabiot in would certainly soften the blow of losing Aaron Ramsey for free in the summer.

The Welshman is expected to join Juventus when his Arsenal contract expires in six months’ time.
