"Many Photos" - Alita: Battle Angel is a dizzying film with far too much going on

STAR WARS is ages away and we’ve got a few months to wait before Captain Marvel and the Avengers say hi.

So, have you got the appetite for a whole new sci-fi universe?

James Cameron (Avatar, Titanic) and director Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Spy Kids) hope so.

Alita: Battle Angel is a huge, expensive and ambitious attempt to finally deliver a decent manga adaptation.

Based on Yukito Kishiro’s Gunnm, it’s been in development for 16 years and carries a lot of expectation – which it kind of delivers on.

Taking themes from Ex Machina, Total Recall and other dystopian touch-points, we find the Earth as a wasteland.

Most people are scavenging and limbless (I’m sure it was explained somewhere) with the Geppetto-like Dr Ido (Christoph Waltz) fixing them up.

He finds the head of Alita in a dump and attaches it to the body of his dead daughter.

When awoken, she goes on a mission to discover who she is.

It’s an incredible film to look at – Cameron and Rodriguez have certainly dreamed up a world I want to visit again.

However, there is far too much going on. It is so dizzying, and flitting from bounty hunting and rollerblading tournaments to big villainous plans takes its toll on your senses.

I came away feeling as though I’d just watched three films at once.

All enjoyable and deftly delivered but, sheesh, I wish they’d relaxed a little.
