When it comes down to it, more often than not, people will declare Loki to be their favourite MCU character. Not just favourite villain; straight up favourite character ever. Tom Hiddleston’s performance as Thor’s brother was absolutely amazing and cemented him as the best part of the MCU, hands down. I mean, sure, he tried to kill his brother a few times, always had an angle, caused Odin’s death inadvertently, and tried to take over the planet.
But, what if it wasn’t all his fault? According to Marvel, it wasn’t. Thanos had a longer game in mind than we ever realized.

For the most part, most will tell you that Loki’s got a good reason for his shenanigans and he’s just a sketchy bastard when it comes to his character. But an outright, murderous villain? Probably not. In fact, it’s all the scepter’s fault.
We know now that Loki’s scepter contained the mind stone; an infinity stone capable of controlling thought and unlocking the secrets of the mind. When Thanos gave it to Loki, he intentionally neglected to tell him everything the stone could do. Loki just figured it would control the people that he touched with it. Thanos never told him that the stone would control him too.
Think back to when Loki first appeared in The Avengers. He was sickly, disheveled and his eyes had a strange blue glow (they’re normally green). It was evident that he wasn’t the same person that fell off the Bifrost in Thor. He was changed; influenced somehow.

Recently, fans on Reddit noticed that the official character page for Loki on the Marvel site. It now read:
“Arriving at the Sanctuary through a wormhole caused by the Bifrost, Loki met the Other, ruler of the ancient race of extraterrestrials the Chitauri, and Thanos. Offering the God of Mischief dominion over his brother’s favorite realm Earth, Thanos requested the Tesseract in return. Gifted with a Scepter that acted as a mind control device, Loki would be able to influence others. Unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred over his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth.”
So there you go; Loki was a victim of the scepter as well. This explains a lot of his sadistic moments in the film, and that moment when the Hulk shakes him and calls him a puny God. It’s almost as if Loki wakes up from a trance.
So that begs the question: is Loki a villain at all? No one seems to think so. His motivations in Thor are pretty simple. All he wanted, was to be considered an equal to Thor. But he discovered that he was secretly a Frost Giant, and that he’d never rule Asgard. Plus, Thor was a huge tool in the beginning of the film. That guy didn’t deserve to rule Asgard either.
So sure, Loki did some deceiving, banished Thor and might have sent the destroyer after him, but it was in the interests of leading Thor on the journey to becoming a worthy king.
Plus, all Loki wanted to do, was to prove himself to Odin, and destroy the Frost Giants, and he felt betrayed by his dad. He didn’t want to rule Asgard because he craved power, but because he grew up thinking it was his birthright. He wanted to be Odin’s son, and a worthy Asgardian.
When you look at his actions in The Dark World, he was just being a shit disturber. His family’s already a mess, and he couldn’t have known that giving Kurse directions would have led to his mother’s death. Once learning the truth, he did everything he could to get his revenge. You could also argue that he faked his death to give Thor the motivation to destroy the Dark Elves once and for all. Technically.
Sure, he’s on the throne at the end of the film, but he still feels like it’s his birthright. He’s just the second child who grew up in someone else’s shadow; he just wants his chance in the light. Can we blame him?
Even in Ragnarok, he didn’t go take over the other realms. Quite the opposite; he stopped caring for anything but chilling on the throne and basking in the gory of his heroism. As for what he did with Odin, he didn’t stick him in the same Asgardian prison he was in. He put him on Earth, into a retirement home to be cared for. He couldn’t have known that it would be torn down and Odin would find his way to Norway, die, and Hela would escape. He’s a trickster God, not a future-telling one.
Sure, he’s still a backstabber in the film and it’s the same old, but when it comes down to it, he stood up for Asgard when it was needed and fought Hela.
I mean, he’s still a little shit, but not a really bad one. Dude just needed a hug from his dad, a long time ago.

Then, Loki gave his life in the ultimate sacrifice to stand with his people against Thanos. He tried to distract the Titan and take his revenge for being played, and ultimately paid with his life.
Whether he’s truly dead or not, we’ll have to wait until later this year to find out. In the meantime, I think it’s safe to take him out of the villain category and forgive him for the Chitauri invasion. We all know now how truly powerful the Infinity Stones can be. Loki didn’t stand a chance against Thanos; not then and certainly not now. Frankly, he should be considered a hero.
And for gods sake, someone give him a fucking hug.
There!
